I'm assuming you aren't confusing Windows Messenger and Windows Instant
Messenger.

Most people recommend blocking the Messenger Service with a broadband
router and/or a software firewall. At this time you would have to check
the software fire wall's system requirements to make sure it's windows
98 compatible though.

The router functions are usually controlled by a simulated web form that
is accessed by typing an IP address in your browser's address bar.
There's some variation in arrangement and multi-levels of the web
form(s) between different models. By default most routers would limit
Messenger Service to messages originating on your LAN. Some router
models might include automatic configuration software (on CD) that
requires a more recent OS, but can still be configured manually through
the browser interface.

Interesting...Webroot had a version of SpySweeper SSv.3.5 that had a shield
that blocked the Windows Messenger Service. I have had a recent increase in
Bulk mail folder spam in the Hotmail after retiring that version of SSv3.5.

Understand that Messenger Service and Windows Messenger and MSN/Windows Live
Messenger are not the same things, Jim.

Yes, I understand the difference. I will probably just leave it as is after
reading about winxp and 2003+servers. The shield on SSv.3.5 did reduce the
spam in bulk folder though or at least it appears that way. thanks anyway.
