modems
quick question, are there any dial up modems that will connect at a higher
speed than others? i have a new emachines and it will only connect (on a good day) at a max of 24Kbps. i have an old systemax that will hit 28.5Kbps. not much difference i know, but anything faster would be appreciated. is there anything else i could use to help my connection? i live in rural iowa where broadband and hi speed dial up is not an option.thanks in advance for any info. rudy |

Changing the modem is unlikely to make any significant difference. There's software that claims to improve connection speed but I've had no experience with it and can't comment. Steve |

I can add little, except that any modern v.90 or v.92 modem, either Win- or
hardware-enabled, in a modern, fast machine is able to connect at up to 54 Kbps, where line conditions permit. If your rural ISP does not support v.92, and probably doesn't, be sure to disable v.92 features in the modem utility setup program, otherwise the modem will probably connect at a much slower speed as it tries to negotiate the features in software, rather than hardware. Lastly, telephone your POTS provider and request a line survey to confirm that all is well from the nearest switching station up to your exterior house connection. You will have to confirm the internal wiring and connections. A good alternative test is to take the box to a nearby city and test, where the line quality is almost certainly better. A good, modern modem is only $10-30, typical street price. I have had very good DUN modem experiences for ten years with a local Boston manufacturer, Zoom Telephonics: Dualmode Zoom/FaxModems 56K, 56Kv, and 56Kx About the Dualmode Zoom/FaxModem 56K, 56Kv, and 56Kx http://www.zoomtel.com/datasheets/56k-dual.html -- Jack E. I had to replace my modem, and internal US Robotics which usually got 28.8 ( I think). I got a cheap one and it only got 19.2 or so. I took it back and got a U.S.Robotics external one (a litle over $50) and it gets 31.2 consistantly. So in my experience, modems can make a difference in connection speed. Malcolm B. |

You also might should go to the modem mfg. site and see if there are any
updates to your modem.
