Default Installation Disk Bad??

A few days ago, I was having trouble with my computer. After a day of
frustration, I had a computer tech to work on it. After an hour or so, he
reformatted my hard drive. During re-installation of ME, he discovered my
back-up ME CD was bad. After a few more hours, when we believed we were to
to the point of just re-installing my programs, he left. Since then, I've
discovered some problems but I can't get the tech to respond. So I'm left on
my own.

Currently, I'm trying to create a start-up disk but so far, I cannot. The
message says it cannot find Autoexec.ebd My ME back-up disk doesn't work.
Is there anywhere I can get a copy of this file??

Also, Desktop is empty. Where can I get a copy of those files?

You can create a boot floppy (EBD) or start up disk as follows:
Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | Startup Disk and follow the prompts.

If you get asked for the location of a "missing" file point the wizard
towards the Win Me cab files which should be in either the
windows\options\cabs or windows\options\install folder. Alternatively
point to the Win9x folder on the Win Me CD. Specifically look for the
file BASE2.CAB and then point the wizard at the folder containing
base2.cab..

If you are unable to create a boot floppy you can download the image of a
Win Me OEM boot disk from www.bootdisk.com. Download to your desktop,
double click to run and follow the prompts to transfer the image to a
floppy. Do NOT copy the downloaded file to a floppy - that won't make a
bootable floppy but instead a floppy disk containing the file you
downloaded.

Your advice worked like a charm. You're the man!!!!!!!!

Now, for the second part of my original question. In the Add/Remove
Programs Properties Box, the Desktop Themes component shows 0.0. mb and with
my bad ME disk, I cannot download this component. Suggestions???

Q1. Who on earth wants themes?
Q2. Why do you think your Win Me disk is "bad"?
A1. Themes showing 0.0MB in Add/Remove Programs | Windows setup is what
you should be seeing until you have installed a theme. Select Themes,
then click Details, select Desktop Themes support and 0.0MB should now
change to 3.7MB and then select your eye candy, sorry "theme", for example
checking yukball, sorry baseball, and you will see 0.0 change to 2.6MB.
Now click OK and you will see Themes showing 6.3MB, in other words the
2.6+3.7MB from earlier.

The computer tech who worked on my PC a few days ago told me my CD was bad.

There appears to be no *.ani files for the computer to find to add to my
Desktop Themes, hence the 0.0 mg. I can click on Desktop Theme Details and
select the themes but then I receive the error message about not finding
the .ani files anywhere on the computer or CD.

Rubbish! Forget about ani files. They won't exist until you try
installing a theme.

Details and select the themes but then I receive the error message
about not finding the .ani files anywhere on the computer or CD.

The only ani files you will find until you install a theme are globe.ani,
appstart.ani and hourglas.ani.

The computer tech who worked on my PC a few days ago told me my CD
was bad.

In which case how did he install Win Me? Look for a folder containing a
number of files with a CAB extension. By default this folder will be
either C:\Windows\Options|\Install or C:\Windows\Options\Cabs, Your
computer tech may just have chosen to delete this folder or locate it
elsewhere in which case get him back at his expense to complete the job.
The folder should contain around 25 CAB files (possibly more if you've
installed some updates), including Base2.cab, catalog.cab, drivern.cab
(n=5-7), net3.cab, net4.cab,precopy.cab and win_n.cab (n=8-22).

I suspect your problem is that either the cab files have been deleted or
are in another location than that stored in the registry. Post back
whether you can locate the cab files and their location.

I understand what you're saying. However, after I sselect a theme, any
theme, the Have Disk box lists no components to install. I don't know where
to go after this point.

I've tried repeatedly to contact the tech. He has not returned any of my
calls.

However you haven't answered my question as to whether you could find the
cab files and their location.

What exactly happens/do you see when you do the following:
1) Select (not check) Desktop Themes and click Details
2) Check Baseball
You should see a box titled Setup containing the text "Baseball requires
the following component(s): Desktop Themes Support .... Dou want to add
Baseball ..... and Yes or No buttons
3) Click Yes.
Baseball should now be checked and show 2.6MB and Desktop Themes should
now be check and show 3.7MB
4) Click OK
Desktop Themes should now have a check in a grey box and show 6.3MB
5) Click Apply
If the path to the CAB files in the registry is correct the install should
proceed if not you should see a box titled Copying Files... containing the
text The file "BASEBA~1.ANI' was not found and a drop down box titled Copy
files from:
If you have located your cab files brose to their location in the drop
box. The file win_8.cab should then appear in the File_name box.
6) Click OK and OK again
The themes install should now proceed.

At which stage do you differ from the above?
