Default still having problems starting up win98

I have seen the following error messages after I made recoverage to my
toshiba satellites2100cds laptop computer:
first: EMM386 has detected error #e'3 in an application at memory address
00xx:xxxx. to minimize the chance of data loss,Emm386 has halted you
computer. for further information, consult documentation.
I ran scandisk to detect the error, normalized and converted bad cluters to
files.
after I restarted my laptop, another error popped up:
00H ERROR
THEN:
WINDOWS PROTECTION ERROR. Yo
An internal stack overflow has caused this session to be halted.
change the stacks setting in your config.sys file, and then try again.

there is nothing about stack setting in my config.sys file:
only 2 lines:c:/windows.panem.sys (approx)
c:/himem.sys

do I need to add the stack setting command in there?

I have tried to contact the dealer and consult documentation, user manual to
resolve the problem. nothing seems to help much.
c drive has data.

my major concern is whether my hdd is broken down.

Thank you very much for your kind assistance, greatly appreciated.

Why did you need to recover your laptop? Where you having some problem that
required a recovery, and if so, are you quite sure that you have fixed
whatever it was that was causing that problem?

First off...just to run Windows...NO autoexec.bat or config.sys is needed.

from dos, simply rename them and see if your machine boots up...

If not...you have some other issue.

When you run scandisk and it "fixes" errors...it merely fixes them
logically...
the files themselves may be destroyed...the fragments are simply named as
..chk files

Try starting the laptop in Safe mode by tapping the F8 key during
bootup. If that works, rename the "c:\autoexec.bat" and "c:\config.sys"
files to "autoexec.bak" and "config.bak". Then restart normally.

You can delete *.CHK.
These are fragments of mangled files left over from
SCANDISK or CHKDSK repairing your File Allocation
Table. (If you have to ask, you can get no use out
of them, so might as well reuse the space they fill.)

Then see if Win98 can start _without_ AUTOEXEC.BAT
and CONFIG.SYS. REName both and reboot. If Win98
fails to start, try DOS command
c:\windows\win.com
If you still fail to start Win98, repost here with details
of all fixes you have applied e.g. as above.
