Links within email open a problematic browser window
PCR replied:
(1) "START, Run, MSInfo32, Tools menu, IE Repair Tool" It produces a rather large "Fix IE Log.txt" in C:\Windows. IE & E are basically one & the same. If this crashes, an over-install of IE is indicated. remainder snipped Mmmm, thanks for trying, but I do not have an IE Repair Tool option on the Tools menu. :-( I don't understand the statement that "IE & E" are basically one & the same. Well, actually, I don't know what "E" represents. Windows Explorer? If so, you're saying it is one and same as IE? I did make a registry change to Windows Explorer a couple days ago. I carefully followed a Microsoft knowledge base article to change a shell value because the folders in my Save As dialog box were not sorting right. I edited only that one value, nothing more, and the as-edited value did match exactly what Microsoft said to enter. The registry change did fix it. The lesser fixes suggested here had had no effect on the sort problem, so I was forced to do the registry edit. |

Thanks, PCR. According to the Microsoft link you provided, that
Repair option is not available in Win 98 SE -- "by design," they take pains to say. Appears I am screwed then. In order to fix IE 5, according to MS, I have to reinstall Win 98 SE!!!!! Fuggetittttt!!!! That is insane. Well, I may consider switching to IE6 but I believe I tried v6 after it first came out and it eliminated some options I liked, which is why I am still putzing along with IE5. I tried Mozilla (but it's slow as molasses) and Firefox (but it freezes on me). But, but, but. I finally got my IE5 toolbar streamlined into a cool one-bar across the top, maximizing my screen area -- and now this other problem crops up. And I am discovering how often I do clink on links in emails! oh, BTW, I did check the Control Panel as you suggested. A Win98 update appears in the scroll list of add/remove programs, but not Internet Explorer. Can't be uninstalled. I seem to remember reading that once upon a time at the Windows Update site. Interesting that you have options available that MS says are "not" available on 98SE. I bought Win98 SE as an upgrade and completely reinstalled. Not an OEM product. Dunno if that made any difference. Thanks much for taking time to try to help me. At least now I know my options -- like 'em or not. (that would be "Not!!" grin ) BArun PCR wrote: http://support.microsoft.com/default...79&Product=w98 The Repair Internet Explorer Tool Is Missing (236579) - After you install Windows 98 Second Edition or Windows Millennium Edition (Me), you are unable to use the Repair Internet Explorer tool. (b) Scroll to & select "Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools". (c) Click the Remove button. It will present you with the option to Repair IE. Select that one. |

Well, that is odd, that I have what the article says I should not, AND
you do not have what it says you should. There is a third way to try the Repair Tool. Glee keeps posting it. Uhhh, well here is an article that has it... http://www.cs.bsu.edu/homepages/gjjo...nd ows98.html or http://tinyurl.com/r5ba ........Quote................ Additional Notes: The end of the Microsoft Knowlegebase article gives the following workaround if the repair utility is inaccessible (keep the Explorer errors, above, open. Otherwise the computer will lock up. drag it to the side and you should still have room to work and do the following steps): If the Internet Explorer Repair Tool Verification does not work, or if Internet Explorer 5 is not listed in the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel, you can start the Internet Explorer Repair tool from a command prompt: Click Start, and then click Run. For Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 and earlier, in the Open box, type the following command (the command is case sensitive), and then click OK: rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE5Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt" ........End of quote........ -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, should things get worse after this, PCR "BArun" wrote in message om... | Thanks, PCR. I have run it a couple of times from "MSInfo32, Tools menu". I haven't
run it from Add/Remove (I don't think), but... It is definitely there, between "Add a component" & "Restore the previous Windows configuration". It allows me to bolt it & does not gray out. I hesitate to actually run it while online, though. -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, should things get worse after this, PCR "Brian A." I don't want to have to reinstall Win98SE just to reinstall Explorer 5.0 to fix this ... nor have to reinstall ecause I crashed Win98SE/IE good trying a workaround! LOL. Does Glee say this workaround can be used specifically for Win98SE? The repair option is supposed to be available for Win98 (according to MS article, just not SE so I am thinking the workaround is directed to that version. Oh, gosh, never mind that last question ... cheez, you provided a link. I will go read that article on the workaround. I am certainly willing to explore possibilities and appreciate the help. Hmmmmmm, that is odd. I have IE Repair Tool listed in system info, yet Repair is
grayed out and thus not selectable on 98SE. Nor can it be selected in Add/Remove. I won't lose sleep over it. If I ever needed to repair it I would either reinstall IE over the top or Ghost back an image. -- Brian A. Hmm, I can't think of an explanation. That article supports your
circumstance, that "Repair" is ghosted. It certainly isn't anything I've done to get it. Perhaps it was Compaq did it. There a couple of "IE5" items in my Add/Remove that have survived an upgrade to IE6. WELL, NOW I see only one, item (4)... (1) 128 bit encryption support for Dial-up Networking (2) Internet Explorer Q867801 (was Q831167, Q832894, Q824145, Q828750, Q822925, Q818529) (3) Microsoft Data Access Components KB870669 (4) Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 Web Accessories (5) Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 SP1 and Internet Tools (6) Microsoft Internet Print Services (7) Microsoft Outlook Express 6 (8) MSN Messenger 4.5. (9) Outlook Express Q823353 (was Q837009, Q330994) (10) Windows 98 Q823559 Update (11) Windows 98 Q840315 Update (12) Windows 98 Second Edition Digital Video Update (13) Windows Media Player system update (9 series) -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, should things get worse after this, PCR "Brian A." Right. That URL is often posted by Glee, & it looks safe enough to me.
Of course, the Repair Tool is not a cure-all, and... could be I've seen it fail to run even that third way. Then, we must progress to some other solution, perhaps the one I posted earlier involving "IE5Setup.exe". -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, should things get worse after this, PCR "BArun" wrote in message om... | PCR wrote: | Well, that is odd, that I have what the article says I should not, AND you do not have what it says you should.
