This might have been virtual PC. It's 2007 I know that. It's not devices I want to emulate, as I don't think that's needed for msdos-6.2x or win98se. Bill |

(I once tried a much older version, and decided to stick with that at the time and not go to the newer 2007 version, so that's why I still recall this). |

Bill VPC2007 Use with WinXP (my current VM environment) The last patch for it, made startup really slow. Windows Virtual PC Use with Windows 7 (used for WinXP Mode, but also can be used like VPC2007 - this is a successor to VPC2007 with Terminal Services support for rootless program operation). Hyper-V Use with Windows 8. Requires Extended Page Tables hardware support on Windows 8. One of the server OSes, has a different hardware requirement (and gaming video cards would not work as well on the server-installed Hyper-V). Note that the "host" OS runs as a "guest" under Hyper-V (Hyper-V is the "boss" of the machine), and the virtual machine architecture is different. I cannot use this on my current machine, because there is no SLAT (second level address table)/EPT (extended page table) support. The program versions are OS locked, meaning you can't just grab a copy of VPC2007 and run it on Windows 8. Even though you would think it would work, the program is likely blacklisted by the OS blacklist capability. Same goes with running Windows Virtual PC on Windows 8. VirtualBos from Oracle/Sun, runs on everything, but has bugs with respect to some OSes. Running Win2K guest on VirtualBox, would result in one core of your CPU being railed at 100% all the time. Oracle/Sun seem incapable of fixing this, and I suspect they've tried to in the past. They probably have no interest in fixing it now. Something like VPC2007, runs stuff back to DOS, supports only one core, and has a harder time with newer OSes (PulseAudio on Linux won't work well there, and Linux timer support and realtime aspects of the environment have a few deficiencies). Microsoft made sure that Windows worked well on VPC2007, and the SoundBlaster emulation is "just compatible enough" to keep Windows happy. If you want to drag an OS, kicking and screaming, into VPC2007, you can try this. I managed to drag WinXP inside WinXP with this tool, the OS booted (the tool changes the HAL to ACPI Uniprocessor for you), but obviously activation caused an issue. So you can use this for P2V attempts if you want. The usual 137GB limits exist. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/s...rnals/ee656415 I have a computer now, that can run Hyper-V. But the weird part is, I haven't so far. The thing is, if I "invest" in Hyper-V machines, I have no backup plan. No other machine or setup can run them, so they're "orphans" and can only run on the one computer. So the attraction just doesn't seem to be there. The VirtualBox machines on the other hand, I have some options. The above table is just the ones I've researched. For example, I don't know what runs on Vista. I have a Win98SE guest machine in VPC2007, so I do actually use that on occasion. It has an ancient copy of Acrobat Distiller I bought in it, and that's about the only reason for using that OS image.
