If Opera 10 won't work on your system, try Opera 9.64 http://www.opera.com/download/?os=wi...r=9.64&local=y It works on my Win98SE systems...I haven't tried 10.x on 98 yet. Older versions have more vulnerabilities. My experience looking through Secumia reports has been that older versions of Firefox tend to be a little less secure that Opera versions. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Windows, A+ http://dts-l.net/ |

Opera 9 has the following unpatched vulnerabilities: http://secunia.com/advisories/36414/ Details: http://www.opera.com/support/kb/view/929/ (trivial) http://www.opera.com/support/kb/view/930/ (trivial) http://www.opera.com/support/kb/view/932/ (trivial) http://www.opera.com/support/kb/view/934/ (I say trivial) For e-mail and usenet news reading, I use Netscape Communicator 4.79. For web browsing, I use firefox 2.0.0.20. No known vulnerabilities to either of those that have been shown to be in circulation or effective when used in conjunction with Windows 98. |

I use Firefox 2.0.0.20 and Opera 10.00 10.00 works but is slower that firefox 2.0.0.20 on dial up but I may not have the network connection set correctly in Opera for dial-up. That question is for another thread. Greg |

: which Opera version(older) better run on older hardware and Windows 98? Is it faster than Firefox? Or older Firefox version is better on Windows98? thank you. After MS Office, FFox is the most overrated application I have seen. Get this: http://www.opera-usb.com/ And delete all the other crap. Finally, Opera (with a little - approved by them - help) fulfills its potential. Goodbye older Operas which /NEVER/ worked with flash (not that it's THAT important, still annoying enough for a "full featured" browser - speaking of which, I still maintain OffByOne is THE best browser, but some "modern" sites don't work with it at all), goodbye all the mythical and semi-extinct animals. I would say "goodbye IE" but I trust it is not even an option for you - I don't even remember when I last used it. 13 years ago? 15? -- Lots of theoretical butchers are alleged and other bloody eyes are suitable, but will Pam secure that? |

For e-mail and usenet news reading, I use Netscape Communicator 4.79. For web browsing, I use firefox 2.0.0.20. No known vulnerabilities to either of those that have been shown to be in circulation or effective when used in conjunction with Windows 98. Just as an aside, because obviously users of Win98 will eventually have few or no options left but to use End Of Life softwa The fact that vulnerabilities are not reported for Firefox 2.0.0.20 does not indicate that they don't exist, only that the product is considered End Of Life and is no longer checked for vulnerabilities, AFAIK. Do you have any links to show that v.2.0.0.20 is even being tested for any recent vulnerabilities? Mozilla does not appear to check the old versions any longer and I see no evidence that any other groups do, including Secunia. Opera 9.64 is AFAIR only very recently EOL, or else not EOL till sometime in October....I don't have time right now to look it up. Similarly, Communicator 4.79 has been EOL for quite some time, and no one is checking it for vulnerabilities, so the fact they are not being reported does not mean they don't exist. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Windows, A+ http://dts-l.net/ |
