Windows 98 User loses ISP subscription July 2006 loss of MS support

I got a call today from a friend who is looking for guidance.
She has just spent three months recovering from an auto accident so has been
out of circulation for awhile. She has an old computer and has been running
Windows 98, mostly for email, and is not knowledgeable about computers.

During her absence her ISP has received its monthly payments, but she has
been given a notice from ISP that is something like this (I haven't seen the
actual info yet):
Windows 98 is no longer supported by Microsoft.
Your password (is gone) ? (is no longer valid) ? - not sure how it's worded.
And there was a suggestion that she go over to Windows XP.

This is what I make of it.
(I already know Microsoft no longer supports Windows 98 as of this past
summer). My supposition is that, since Windows is no longer supported, that
there are no more security updates; that since the ISP probably has covered
itself by security at the server that they aren't interested in "maybe
contaminated" Windows 98 output through their server.

I hadn't heard it like this before, but sounds most probable. Does some one
know, specifically, that this is a common occurrence for Windows 98 users,
since the loss of update support?

Have you considered asking her ISP for a full explanation of their decision?

Speculating on partial information is next to useless. Suggest you either
get the communication or ask her ISP what is happening.

Yes, that information is being sent over. There is another person who will
make the ISP contact, but I seem to be the person who tracks down
information so they will know what is going on first - they aren't familiar
with troubleshooting. As you noticed, my question referred to whether this
might be a common occurrence among Windows 98 users since loss of MS
support. I'm checking on the support pages for that ISP to see if there is
anything like an announcement. Doesn't look like it, and they still have
instructions up for Windows 95 and 98 for new dial-up accounts.

Thanks, Ron and Richard.

Really, it won't matter how many ISPs are doing this - what does matter is
if this particular ISP is actually doing it. :-) That said, I can't say
I've heard of this becoming a popular policy.

I doubt that the demise of W98 support per se has much bearing on her issue.
What may have a bearing is that W98 is an old system and ISPs, hardware
makers and software developers are starting not to support it simply
because it is so old and so patched. I suspect that it won't be too long
before XP is facing the same problems.

Thanks for the response. I think I'm building my case (old computer, old
software). I should get her papers tomorrow.

Windows 9x is actually VERY much less likely to be compromised than XP,
which has innumerable security flaws. I still use it for general Internet
access for that very reason. (Would use Linux but it doesn't support the
hardware too well)

The main security risk in 98 is the Outlook/Internet Explorer combination.
Avoid those programs and you're unlikely to get hit by anything nasty. Same
cannot be said of XP, which has vulnerabilites whereby ports which are
exposed to the Internet can be directly attacked. DCOM/RPC for example -and
these are always a risk whatever software you run.

In terms of ISPs, the main issue is probably that their helpdesk staff want
to concentrate on a single OS to make their life simpler. That's probably the
real reason.

Whether this makes any real difference is very doubtful. Provided your modem
still works with 98, then that is all that matters really. If it doesn't
then a router and network card may be a cheaper alternative to a new PC, as
they are largely OS-independent.
