Upgraded memory from 256MB to 512MB
Upgraded memory from 2x128MB to 2x256MB DDR400 CL3 and it now hangs up
during boot. It will run Win98SE safe mode. Also runs fine under Windows 2000 & ram tests fine. Bios reads 512MB. When I remove a 256MB card, it boots under Win98SE. Either card. Both cards test good. I am stumped. |

Win98 should have no problem with 512 megs of RAM Give this a try: in the bios, underclock the RAM...try setting it for 333mhz (or less) In very rare instances, I've had to underclock RAM slightly to get a system to work properly. |

Read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/253912 You probably need to write into SYSTEM.INI Maxfilecache=524288 For more detail see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/108079/EN-US/ and see more config. tips in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/181966/EN-US/ -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |

Not with systems with 512 mb. Anyways, try the following: Use the MaxFileCache setting in the System.ini file to reduce the maximum amount of memory that Vcache uses to 512 megabytes (524,288 KB) or less. For additional information about how to use the MaxFileCache setting, seek the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: Q108079 http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q108079 32-Bit File Access Maximum Cache Size Use the System Configuration utility to limit the amount of memory that Windows uses to 512 megabytes (MB) or less. For additional information about how to use the System Configuration utility, seek the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: Q181966 http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q181966 MORE INFORMATION Vcache is limited internally to a maximum cache size of 800 MB. This problem may occur more readily with Advanced Graphics Port (AGP) video adapters because the AGP aperture is also mapped to addresses in the system arena. For example, if Vcache is using a maximum cache size of 800 MB and an AGP video adapter has a 128-MB aperture mapped, there is very little address space remaining for the other system code and data that must occupy this range of virtual addresses. |

Upgraded memory from 256MB to 512MB
I added Maxfilecache=524288, no change.
I updated the BIOS to the lastest version, no change. Running low on options, I ran the Win98SE setup again. Whatever was lacking, the setup program fixed it. Thanks for your help |

You don't really need that line above for only 512MB, but it will not hurt anything. In fact, it you ever decide to increase your ram again, that line will be important. PS: If you do increase your ram again, I would definitely go into the BIOS again to make sure everything is OK and then select " Save and Exit" before booting into Win98Se. Glad it's working for you now. PS: Did you notice any extra speed or performance since adding the extra ram? |
