As with what Don said...... Read!

But, to add something more important, 'Ask'.
It sounds to me like you really want to start over, and
if so, you need to understand things like 'Fdisk' and
'Partitioning', and 'preparation'.
You havent mentioned the size of your HardDrive, or any
other details of what you want to do with it if you truely
decide to Start Over.

There are so many things to consider should you decide to start
from 'scratch'. (people are still scratching their arses trying to figure
out 'who or what Scratch is')

IF you have a virus/trojan/etc, then chances are you will get advice
on how to remove it/them, and afterward all will be fine.
This road may be a better road to take IF you already have all
windows updates installed,,, because putting them all back on
and even including a simple task like getting I/E6 (outlook included)
can actually be a pain.
I suggest you assess your game-plan, then post back

Sometimes starting over can be a good thing, if you know what you
want....... but if you dont know what you want, it will become
a nightmare.

Bottom line, try to post details of what is actually happening when you
get the error messages you mention; Post the error messages and when
they first started coming; Try to remember the last 'thing' you downloaded
from the internet, or installed via a CD, and whether it was/is compatible
with your Operating/System.

I been where you are buddy, and found out too-late that there are 'other'
methods to rectifying a problem,,, and yours has smells of something that
may definately Not require a Total re-instal.

See, gary is already willing to chime in and help you with a
clean install.... he may even assist in saving your irreplacable data
prior to wiping your drive.

So, dont give up yet, we havent even spoken about any data you may
wish to save, especially irreplacable things like tax files or photos.
As you can see, gary likes clean installs, so save whatever is precious
and ask gary for clean install advise when you are ready.

Best thing to do is get a new hard drive and install to that. Leave the old
one for storage. HDDs are cheap. Once the system is up and running, gather
what you must from the old HDD, then wipe it and use it for images, backups,
etc. Prevents future disasters from being so disastrous.

No problem:
1. Read Gary Terhune's comments.
2. Buy a new hard drive (nowadays cheap).
For Win98 anything from 40 to 120 Gb will do you.
3. Read Ron Badour's
http://home.satx.rr.com/badour/html/w98_restore.html
for advice about preparing the hard drive (FDISK) and
saving data from your old drive.
4. Test your SETUP booting floppy before you
proceed as below. (Boot from the flooppy and
verify it can run the DIR command on a CD in its drive.)

Sample procedu
1. Instal the new HDD as Master on IDE 1 and make
new partitions (using FDISK) all for large drives:
one Primary DOS size 2 to 10 Gb (max);
one or more Extended DOS, size 10 to 40 Gb each.
Give each a distinctive name.
2. Installed as above, your new (empty) Primary
DOS partition will become drive C: (Your old drive C
if connected as the slave on IDE1 will automatically
become drive D.) Other partiitions on the new drive
will be in order E, F, G and so on.
3. FORMAT all the new empty drives. Be sure you
do _not_ format drive D which was formerly your C.
(Distinctive driive names help keep these straight.)
4. Run SETUP to instal Win98 on new drive C:
5. When that has finished successfully, copy all
your old drive C (now drive D) to a new letter drive
on your new HDD. (Then you can reformat this
drive and use it for backup or extra storage.)
