Default Zip files - I can't open them

My computer has stopped recognising Zip files and asks me
to choose a program to open them - none of the programs
will do this. Any ideas? It seems WinZip is missing.

Tom,

WinZip is a third party utility and not part of Win Me.

To open and use zip files either install and use an application such as
WinZip (www.winzip.com) or you can use Win Me's compressed folders.
Compressed Folders are installed as follows: Control Panel | Add/Remove
Programs | Windows Setup, Select System Tools and click Details and then
check the box alongside "Compressed Folders", the click OK and Apply.

If you have already installed Win Me's compressed folders and they no
longer appear to work try re-registering zipfldr.dll as follows:
Start, Run and enter in the box
REGSVR32 ZIPFLDR.DLL
and then click OK. If that fails then uninstall compressed folders (see
above) and then reinstall.

WinMe has an optional compression (zip) utility - Windows Millennium
Compression Tool.
Check in the Accessories | System Tools Folder to see whether or not it's
installed.

You may eve have uninstall it, re-boot and re-install it again if it has
become corrupted.

If you need to install it -
Control Panel | Add/Remove \ Windows System tab
System Tools - Disk Compression

You could also perhaps use WinZip (shareware) to compress or open zipped
files. Search the web for WinZip.

Mike, cheers, I did as you said and checked the box, and
restarted. However my compressed files still ask me to
designate the program that opens them. Any ideas? The
compressed folder icon has not appeared on the thumbnails.

Any ideas?

Other than reading the rest of my post and either or both reregistering
zipfldr.dll and/or using WinZip, no.

Mike,

I have gone for WinZip, a free 21 day trial has let me
open the urgent files while I try to sort out ME. When
telling the computer what to open compressed files with, I
select Other and plough through all applications but there
is nothing that jumps out. Strange, but $29 will sort it
once and for all with WinZip!!

Thanks for your time.

Mart,

Thanks - I found the box and selected the compression and
restarted, but the compressed files are still asking me to
select what program opens them. I go for Other and plough
through the applications but nothing jumps out at me. $29
will sort it with WinZip.

Thanks for your time,
