Default desktop icon layout - where?

As per the subject line. Where does W98 store the physical layout of
the desktop icons (because it surely does)?

DESKTOP.INI

Well, a WinExploder search of my C: drive revealed 15 files with that
name, the most recent of which are dated Sept '09. This is despite
the fact that the desktop has been reorgainsed as recently as a couple
of weeks ago, and has had new items added in the last few days.

A quick glance at them revealed nothing suggesting icon layout. Most
contained reg-key-looking lines like:

[ExtShellFolderViews]
Default={5984FFE0-28D4-11CF-AE66-08002B2E1262}
{5984FFE0-28D4-11CF-AE66-08002B2E1262}={5984FFE0-28D4-11CF-AE66-08002B2E1262}

[{5984FFE0-28D4-11CF-AE66-08002B2E1262}]
PersistMoniker=file://Folder.htt

[.ShellClassInfo]
ConfirmFileOp=0

Any other ideas?

Not in the Desktop.ini....probably in the Registry in a format you can't
easily modify directly.
What are you trying to do, exactly? It might help if we knew what you
need to accomplish.

Simple. Periodically - for one reason or another - the desktop icon
locations get scrambled. I want to be able to *save* the information
so that restoration to their former positions (which means a lot to me
with a crowded desktop - don't ask, don't criticise!) isn't a night's
work dragging icons all over the place. Currently I have a screenshot
which I use to guide the process but it is still uber-tedious.

Just use this....it's what I've used on Win9x and XP:
