Default Blue Screen when using Quicken 2001 Deluxe ver R3

Hello:
I am having problems when using Quicken 2001. I am running Win Me on a Dell
Inspiron 8100 laptop w 320 megs of RAM and a 1.2 Ghz Pentium III. Anyway, it
seems to me that there is a memory leak problem with Quicken. When all I have
open is Outlook and Quicken, I sometimes get the BSD, and other times get a
message saying "Out of memory close some programs before continuing". This
happens often, but not always, when I try to compose a new e-mail when
Quicken is open. Then, when I go to shut down my computer, I get the BSD
saying there is an error with 06:04AF:00002071. I have tried to find a
reference to this error code, but have been unsuccessful. Please help direct
me as to how to fix this problem, since the only way out is to hold the power
button down to shutdown, and then restart. This is NOT reproducable in all
instances. Also, how do I find what all of the programs that are running when
I click the task manager are? I see plenty of names, but have no idea which
of them should be there and which I can safely close. TIA.

Startup Configuration for Program Launching

Use Start - Run - MSCONFIG and go to the Startup tab. Compare the
listing there with the following Startup checklists:

http://www2.whidbey.com/djdenham/Uncheck.htm
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.htm
http://www.3feetunder.com/krick/startlist.htm - has trojan related items
listed
http://www.answersthatwork.com/Taskl...s/tasklist.htm

Note: Please ensure that you fully understand the purpose of a
startup item, how and why it was put into the startup, and the
consequences (if any) of removing it before you make any changes.
Some items are very important for the proper and safe functioning of
your computer, including at least one item that is listed twice,
LoadPowerProfile.

Also see http://www.onlinehelp.bc.ca/tips.htm#resources
for an explanation about System Resources.

Did these problems begin to occur after installing the MS Windows Update
Critical Patch KB891711? If so, try disabling KB891711 from your close
program list and then run Quicken again. At one time I had thought, as
others, that there was a graphics issue with this patch. Presently, I am not
so sure. I get the Blue Screen errors when Mercury Mail 4.01b is running,
but not when I shut it down. I also got insufficient memory errors on trying
to launch Mozilla 1.7.5 or Netscape 7.2.

I would be curious about knowing the update history of your computer, if the
KB891711 patch is the issue.

Norman:
The KB891711 patch is listed both in the Add/Remove programs area, as well
as in the Task manager (close program box you referred to). I clicked End
Task in the task manager, and will let you know if it continues to happen.
What I have found out is that every time I try to shut down, I get the BSD
with the reference to 06:04AF:00002071. Once this happens, the only way to
shut down is by holding the power button down for a few seconds. Then, when
windows comes back up, I have to wait for scandisk to run. Do you know where
I can research the code I am getting? Thanks for your help.

Jeff, as a test, temporarily disable the launching of KB891711.exe at
startup by unchecking its box in msconfig/Startup.
Reboot to Normal Mode and confirm that it is not running in Task Manager, or
any process viewer.
If it is absent, run your Quicken program, observing how it works, and then
after some time, shutdown normally. Then reboot and repeat.
If all is well, re-enable KB891711, using msconfig, and repeat the tests.

Obviously, if the executing KB891711 is hindering Quicken and/or the normal
shutdown, it is the culprit, and you will have to decide how to proceed.

If the shutdown problem occurs w/o 891711 running, review
