Default Printer attached ok - but won't print

I recently reinstalled Windowns98 (to solve a VPN
problem) - now can't print.

Wierd problem - happens with 2 printers : Epson Stylus
Color 660 (parallel) and C42UX (USB) (so its unlikely
to be a hardware issue).

I remove port and unsinstall sw, then do clean reinstall.

From print utility panel I can run nozzle check and
clean ok, but can't print test page "Windows was unable
to print test page".

Troubleshooter is no help. All applications fail to print
with "unknown" errors.

Help!
