Norton def file too large for Rescue Set
Does anyone have any news regar_ding a Symantec Norton
antivirus Rescue Set problem_. When attempting to update the Norton AntiVirus Rescue Set, "Norton Rescue" gives an error message which means that one of the definition files is now too large to be copied to a floppy disk of the Rescue Set. Proceeding_ without that definitions file would mean no proper Rescue Set. I filled in their online Support form on August 2nd, 2004 to let them know about this, but have got no response from them, not even the promised "tracking number" for the issue. The following is further detail: The following is the error message I got today, but I also get a similar message on my other PC (each PC has a separate Norton AntiVirus licence): "Some of the files needed for the Rescue Set cannot be copied ..." Details: "File Problems The following files cannot be copied to the rescue disk. VIRSCAN9.DAT Problem: Insufficent rescue media space to copy this file. Source Folder: C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\SYMANT~1 \VIRUSD~\20040811.020 Destination Folder: (Root) In Windows Explorer - in the above folder "20040811.020", the above Norton definitions file "VIRSCAN9.DAT" (dated August 11, 2004) is shown having a size of 1480KB. By comparison, the Rescue Set floppy "Definitions 5" contains ONLY one file "VIRSCAN9.DAT" which dates from July 7th, 2004 (when it was last successfully updated), and has a size (just under the floppy disk limit) of 1400KB. Any further news about this issue would be appreciated. |

This sounds like something Symantec will have to sort out. Why not =

Norton def file too large for Rescue Set
Or get rid of Norton altogether, which is, after all, the sanest solution.

I complained when the original NAV rescue expanded beyond one floppy. They
continue to use the ever-expanding number of dat files and increase their sizes as well. I would expect them to redefine the dat files again to reduce the over-sized version that won't fit on floppy. Presently, if you use the standard method of making a NAV rescue diskettes, it won't work properly. Here's the method I use for making a rescue set that can be used independently of the hard disk. Point NAV rescue to a folder on the hard disk to save the entire rescue set. With a Zip or LS-120 drive, copy all the files to it. Make this diskette bootable by using the format option in windows explorer by selecting the option to copy boot files only for the Zip or LS-120 drive. Your PC must support the Zip or whatever for booting and set that way to use this properly. You can use a similar method for burning a boot CD, but you have to point NAV at the dat file location when actually using NAV rescue set. Must be burned in ISO format. Much more complicated on burning end. Finally, must close session when done selecting proper burning options. You have to reburn this each definition update. "anonymous" wrote in message ... Hello Lil,
Many thanks for your informative response to my query. I have made the Norton "Rescue Set" on CD (since I do not have the other two types of media to which you referred) and it appears to function okay. -----Original Message----- I complained when the original NAV rescue expanded beyond one floppy.
