This has me stumped, I have not used WIN98 for years but am setting up
an old computer.

Whilst installing an ADSL modem (working fine on my laptop) it crashed
win98 during the install (surprise,surprise).

Upon restarting WIN98 after Windows welcome screen it stalls for a

EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in module EXPLOREREXE at

Now the problem is this. It is a borrowed computer so I can not simply
do a fresh install on windows.

I have extracted and replaced explorer.exe from a old win98se disc I
had. this has not fixed the problem.

I have gone to every registry refresh point via scanreg. This did not
fix the problem.

I have run scanreg/fix. this didn't fix the problem.

I have spent six hours searching for solutions on the net

I have approx 48hrs to fix this or I will have to buy another PC, which
i do not want to do for the 3 weeks it will be needed.

Any help appreciated

I have win98se and it would just simply stop during start-up. The last
screen it had up was an AVG screen. Couldnt tell which one as it just
flashed the border on the screen, then stalled,..dead, nada, zippo. What to
do? After mucking around for about an hour, I found it would start OK in
"safe-mode". So I ran "maintenance wizard" (scan-disk and defrag) from
"programs" "system tools" and the problem went away,...for a few days.
Eventually, I uninstalled AVG and re-installed it from scratch. This was a
permanent fix.
The only thing i can think of which caused AVG to spaz-out the PC was a
habit we had of "pause scanning" during an AVG daily scans, and then
forgetting to let it finish. Since then, I properly close AVG, and let it do
a full scan during times the PC is not in use. On dial-up, AVG caused the PC
to go so slow (on other tasks)that it was unuseable. It also takes over
hour.

Well, I don't know. You certainly have gone the extra mile. I did
actually help a friend install a Verison DSL Wireless Modem (is that
like what PartyMarty has?) once but on an WinSE machine-- BUT that was
in good boot to Windows. It went really smoothly-- once he clicked the
right program to install! He tried 3 times clicking something else
first!

Most of the things you'd be looking for have filenames that conform to 8.3
naming standards. And if you stare long enough (or know a bit about the
structure of a typical Windows 98 installation), you can usually figure out
what a folder's name is to enough of a degree to know if it's what you're
looking for. Exploring the contents of a folder, of course, would help even
more.

Maybe. Still, it would be tough to talk one through it. I guess the
suggestion could be made that OP try to do it on his own or to go look &
report back. I certainly wouldn't know the folder/file names in this
particular case. And certainly the use of WinFile's FileRun for the
Control Panel should be mentioned. Thanks for reminding me about that--
in case you fall into another earthquake too deep for your poodles to
reach or are murdered by MEB!
