Looking good.....and I think we could co-author that *book*!! You can
do the selling in the UK/Europe and I will cover Canada & the States.

Must start making notes on really common, basic newbie problems and
questions.

Raining ice here today. Can't go out until the big freeze stops. Which
should be about dinnertime, so the drive home from work is going to be
one SOB for those poor souls that have to work. (eg)

Go for it, Figgs!!!

BTW - the framework for the new page is now up.....

let me know what you think! - I'll flesh out the page with detailed
instructions later.

You're forgiven g - if for no other reason than that you've
spurred me into thinking about putting my thoughts on the subject
down on paper, and thence up on my site!

A *thence* would be nice. As in white picket? (groan)

I have been saying for years that I am going to write a newbie
pamphlet/book......all about cleaning your computer and AV's and
firewalls and so on. No one teaches newbies anything and if they
don't know about these groups, they are totally lost.

I got the idea after helping several friends and neighbours who
didn't know they had to update an AV, or clean out TEMP files and
cookies and so on.

Working title could be.....*So you just bought a new computer.....now
what* or words to that effect, lol. Subtitles of course.

Maybe I better stick to crocheting doilies, lol

Noel,
All I can say is that this site is one that was referred to back in
my Me days. Not that I complied with everything on the site and
it has been a long time since I have even looked through
it......just remembered it as being pretty good and detailed. If
it is that bad, I sincerely apologize and bow to your superior
knowledge of the subject. I have removed it from my Favorites list.
One thing I did notice in your reply, shouldn't the link for
Adaware be http://www.lavasoft.de/ ???.....or did you post the link
to the 'bad site?'.....surely, not.
Heirloom, old and humbled

"Noel Paton" wrote in message

I can agree with most things in that site - but NOT sections 8, 9
or 16...... (more later - most likely tomorrow)
Section 18 is redundant if you're done the reinstall properly, as
it should have corrected any errors in the VMM32.vxd file - and
if you haven't done it properly, then the chances are that IE
won't work)

As far as the tweaking section goes (#19) - most of those programs
are not worth the paper that they're written on (before
printing!!)
I could list the problems, but I consider it a waste of everyone's
time.
so I'll list the programs worth thinking about ( in the right
circumstances!!)
Adaware (properly called Ad-Ware, since a program called adaware
also floats around, and is a VERY bad thing!) -
www.lavsoftusa.com
TweakUi - from (and ONLY from) -
http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstati.../nttweakui.asp
Belarc Advisor from http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
Trend Micro's House Call at
http://housecall.antivirus.com/pc_housecall

ALL of the others are unnecessary and in some cases WILL lead to
problems!!
If you have problems with Scandisk - find out what's causing the
problem, rather than working around it - the chances are that it's
slowing your system down anyhow!
System Restore should NEVER be removed - although there are
circumstances under which it may be appropriate to disable it.
CacheMan is an accident waiting to happen (flames, awaitedg)
WinRescue is total BS.
RamPage WILL kill your system if you give it half a chance
etc.... etc....

Really, H - I thought we had you better educated than this!!
I can see that I'm going to have to create another page of my own!

Add this one to the list, as well.
Heirloom, old and there's
a ton of them

Try this instead
http://www.google.co.uk/search?as_q=...ghts=&safe=off

or
http://tinyurl.com/aqv9v

(it works better, anyhowg)

I've flagged it - hopefully we'll either get a new link, or
they'll reinstate the old one

Mighty fine, Noel.
See that? You can't even afford to go anywhere
with your *knees up* bg.
You are much too much needed here.
The book for newbees has been written many times over.
All that needs to be done now is, to compress it in print form in the name
of all those *who care* (alias: Figgs) g.
Boy, am I in trouble now??

Harry.
