Default Win 98 shut down prob because of dial-up adapter?

When I shut down the computer hangs at the "windows is shutting down" page. So I went through the trouble-shooting steps and when I got to the one that told me to go to Device Manager and disable anything under "Network adapters" it shut down fine. There is only one thing listed under network adapters and that is "Dial-up Adapter" and if it is disabled I can shut down fine but I get other error messages including "Error 645: The Microsoft Dial-up adapter is not installed or not responding properly." So, can anyone tell me how to fix this dial-up adapter so that I can shut down with it enabled?
Thanks

Just a couple of suggestions neither will have an adverse
effect.
Try re-installing it, you may have had a corrupted file.
Also ensure that you dial-up connection is disconnecting
as it should after you have come off line.

Go in to MB Bios. If you are using a standard modem?
Look in bios for "Fast Ethernet Adaptor" If one is there?
Disable it.
