Zero Virtual Memory
Recently my 4 year old desktop would not go into Windows and gave a white on
blue message: "WHILE INITIALIZING DEVICE SYMTDI. Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer. System halted_"flashing underscore. I manually removed all SYM/NAV software. Same result without the note on the screen. I can boot into Safe Mode but the Help Center cannot initialize. The Windows sytem indicates that there are 0Mb of virtual memory. The C indicates there are 65,535k of XMS. However it also indicates that there are zero k in free upper memory block. I have all of the cd's that came with the pre-installed software. I also have a startup floppy disk which I created June 22 2005. Any help you can give would really be appreciated. -- Al W |

Try this
Boot to Safe Mode (kil the H&S screen when it appears) Start|Run type SCANREG /FIX click OK reboot on request...... see if that helps at all. -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Al W" wrote in message ... Noel, I did as you suggested and got a "Out of memory. Close unnecessary
programs and try again" message from the Windows Registry Checker. I appreciate your attempt to help. -- Al W "Noel Paton" wrote: Try this Boot to Safe Mode (kil the H&S screen when it appears) Start|Run type SCANREG /FIX click OK reboot on request...... see if that helps at all. -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Al W" wrote in message ... Hmmm - sound like your registry is rather bloated. (can happen if the
registry files aggregate to more than about 8MB) It may be worth trying from DOS - boot to DOS using your startup floppy, (make sure it's an ME one) and use the same command (SCANREG /FIX). If that doesn't work either, then try a System Restore - http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=279736 -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Al W" wrote in message ... Noel,
I tried both and still no joy. With the first attempt I did get a message: "Windows successfully fixed registry" but when I tried booting into windows I got a message that IFSMGR could not be initialized. I then re-booted in safe mode and confirmed that the IFSHELP.SYS is NOT installed. I then tried to activate the system restore. I edited the SYSTEM.INI file as described, confirmed that the change had been saved and then booted into windows. I got an empty grey screen. I went back to safe mode and confirmed that PROGMAN.EXE does exist. I probably also should mention that there is no reference to System Restore in the System Tools folder. Is it possible that the computer supplier may have removed some of the troubleshooting functions? Probably not. I am getting too cynical probably. Thanks for sticking with me on this. -- Al W "Noel Paton" wrote: Hmmm - sound like your registry is rather bloated. Who is your 'supplier'??
This looks rather as if you have GoBack installed - if so, then you may need to go to Symantec's website and ask their assistance (I can't support Symantec in any way, simply because I consider that they are a virus to be expunged from any computer running a Windows OS!) -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Al W" wrote in message ... Noel,
The supplier is Dell. My opinion of them matches your opinion of Symantec. In fact, regarding Symantec, my problem started just after I renewed my annual subscription for NAV. That was when I got the hang-up that mentioned the problem with initializing device SYMTDI. It is possible though, that in my zeal to remove everything that looked like a Symantec and/or an NAV item I may have removed some critical data. However, I still don't know what happened to the virtual memory. Anyhow, thanks for your input. I will play with it a little longer before I put the chainsaw to it! -- Al W "Noel Paton" wrote: Who is your 'supplier'??
