Default Defrag problem

Defrag stops with a "contents of drive have changed" message every 10
secs or so and restarts. I have stopped all processes in Task Manager
except for Explorer and SysTray, Task Scheduler is paused. I have
checked for viruses with today's version of Trend PC-Cillin. Scandisk
checks OK.

This is a new problem, Defrag used to work OK. The only other fact I
have is that the machine "seems" to be running a bit slower than normal,
apps seem to take longer to start and close, explorer disk reads also
seem slow.

Looks like something is running in the background but what? Any ideas
greatly appreciated.

Richard,

I would run not only an antivirus -- but also an
anti-adware/anti-spyware program like Ad-Aware, www.lavasoftusa.com

See also http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/Darnit.htm -- mainly "Prevent
browser hijackings" link.

Windows normally loads all sorts of stuff in the
background -- which is why Safe Mode is available
on demand (usually by holding down Ctrl key during
reboot.) Did you try running DEFRAG in Safe Mode ?

I remember reading something about leaving the Start Menu activated.
Is someone pinging you or are you a master browser?

Looks like it was a spyware problem. I had to upgrade to Adaware SE from
V6 before it found the offending item ( along with 147 others!)

Thanks for the help.
