Disable "Found New Hardware"
I have Win98 installed on a dual boot (with Win XP) partition which I
use for running old software - mostly games. Each time I boot into Win98 I keep getting the Found New Hardware messages relating to USB devices. As I will never print, view CF card data, or back-up to an external HD, from this partition, is there any way I can disable the message/s please? None of these devices have ever been installed on Win 98 and I wonder if I would be able to find any Win 98 drivers for them, anyway. I have searched on-line for Win98-specific information, but without finding anything helpful. Many thanks Kate |

Many thanks Kate I would question: What it is actually asking you and whether you ever installed an un-official USB support driver set? What is the BIOS setting for USB support? Is it that the "hub" USB base has not been installed or was the chipset not supported for Win9X? *Check - Control Panel - System - Look at the bottom for the Hub USB [base setup] being installed. ** Here's a couple "IFs and "ORs" {depending upon your system} and what you can try: *IF* it has been installed, and there is no present device attached, then it may be that at one time you did have some device attached (or attempted to attach something or left it in the port) and never finished that installation. OR that it is no longer attached. OR that you do have something like a USB: mouse, game controller, keyboard, printer, network device, or other device [like a secondary expansion hub] which is not properly installed. *IF* the motherboard hub is installed - Start in Safe Mode and check for "ghost"/prior devices/drivers under USB and un-install. At times it may be best to un-install ALL the USB listing including the hub/base and let Windows re-install it. Make sure you have any required drivers {if required] for any intended USB devices [and potentially the motherboard] before removing the device(s). Make a written notes of what was installed prior to removal. *IF* the hub is not installed or there are no "ghosted devices", you may have corrupted or improperly installed USB base drivers; try re-installing the drivers for your add-in slot based USB adapter, or the in-built motherboard support [motherboard device driver set (like the VIA 4in1 or whatever it is called/offered now)] make sure though that it has Win9X drivers and/or supports 9X AND is designed for your particular chipset. *OR* if you have a secondary hub [such as a four port expansion or otherwise], make sure it is properly installed and configured. Also check the cabling and sockets for corrosion and line break or otherwise; might want to power it if required. *Also check the connections if you have/use a USB keyboard or other attachment (like a mouse or printer). Many thanks Kate Rather than 'click off' the installer simply let it run to completion... even if you do not have the drivers it's looking for... just let it complete the process. If you do not have the drivers it's looking for there is typically a prompt not to see the message again |

If you do not have the drivers it's looking for there is typically a prompt not to see the message again I think the reason why the hardware is found when I boot the Win98 partition is because it is a dual boot and the USB devices are installed and working in my WinXP partition with XP drivers. I do not have Win98 drivers for them, nor do I want them. However, I have now run each installation sequence to finish. Two drivers were found so I let them install, and the others all have yellow questionmarks by them in Device Manager, but that`s OK as I don`t get pestered to install them any more. Thanks for the suggestion. Kate |
