You don't without add-on software like the HP JetDirect TCP printing
software. If your device/printer is not a JetDirect device check
google.com, download.com or tucows.com for add-on LPR/TCP printing software.

It is a HP JetDirect and I am using HP JetDirect software.
However, I am just seeing if their is a Microsoft way to do TCP/IP printing in WinME.

Thanx You Richard.

Dave,

Just install the JetDirect driver. I have two PCs here that run Win Me
and both print to my network printer (LJ4550) using the JetDirect
software. Not having an internal JetDirect card I'm using an old external
JetDirect Box to link the printer to the switch.

Nope. TCP/IP printing was introduced only on the NT side of the family,
none of the 9x clients can support TCP/IP without the added software
support. For that matter, "real" TCP/IP printing only works on Windows 2000
or better, Windows NT only supported LPR printing.

Oh, and you're welcome. ;-)

Hi Mike:

Yes I did already but I was hoping to cut the overhead of using HP software. I got a good
deal on a HP 1100 business inkjet with two 8 1/2" x 11" bins and an internal JetDirect
print-server. In the office all of my printers are HP (except for a Xerox Document Centre
432ST copier+printer) and have either internal or external print-servers which are easily
configured by a BootP/TFTP server. When we were at Win98SE level workstations, we pointed
to queues on a NT4 server. So never had much experience with Win9x/ME in conjunction with
HP print-servers. I was hoping there *may* be a TCP/IP printer port add-on for WinME. Oh
well, had to ask.

Thanx and Happy Holidays Mike.

Dave

Dave,

Now if I could only get a good deal on a 610N or 615N internal HP print
server but seems it's not to be. They come up regularly on eBay but seem
always to be pre-empted by some pro outfit out to save a few bucks. For
example a couple of weeks ago a print shop here in London bid on and won
over twenty 610N & 615N servers in little over a week. They've seemingly
bought all they need but there's another outfit doing just the same at the
moment. :-(

I thought that at one time MS had posted a TCP/IP add-in for Win Me but if
so it was pretty short-lived and I didn't grab a copy. However since it
was some time ago I might be thinking of something that was posted for
98SE. Ah, my bad, it was IPP (Internet Printing Protocol) and it was
during the Win Me beta but don't know what came of it. To quote the
e-mail I received "This is the only way on Windows ME that you can print
to a networked printer without a server. IPP also provides a fully
integrated solution with UPnP for printer discovery and usage over a
network."

Happy hols to yourself and also a Happy New Year.
