Default Ping Figgs Sun Java

Well I bit the bullet & installed Sun`s java & here is what I found. Thought
you might want to know as you responded to my post before. So far all is
well. Thanks again.

Switching between the Microsoft VM and the Sun JVM

This article applies to:
JRE version(s):
1.4.2_xx (xx can be 01-99)

You can switch between the Sun JavaT Virtual Machine and the Microsoft VM.
The Sun JVM can be enabled and disabled without having to uninstall it.
Switching back and forth between these Virtual Machines can be done through
the Advanced tab in your Windows Internet Options Control Panel, OR by using
the JavaT Control Panel. Hint: it's good to check both places.

Instructions for switching between the Sun JVM and Microsoft VM using
Internet Options:

Open Control Panel by clicking Start-Settings-Control Panel
Open the Internet Options window by double clicking Internet Options
Click the Advanced Tab
Find the "Java (Sun)" item and check or uncheck the checkbox which says
"Use Java 2 v 1.4.x for applet (requires restart)"
Check or uncheck the box next to Microsoft VM
Save your changes by clicking the OK button
Restart the browser

Instructions for switching between the Sun JVM and Microsoft VM using the
Java Control Panel:

Open the Windows Control Panel by clicking Start-Settings-Control Panel
Open the Java Control Panel by double clicking the icon labeled "Java
Plug-in"
In the Java Control Panel, click the Browser Tab
Under the Browser Tab you will see checkboxes next to installed Web
browsers.
Check or uncheck the checkbox next to the Web browser you want enable or
disable from using the Sun JVM
Click the Apply button to save your settings
Restart Internet Explorer

Thank you for the information!! I appreciate that. I just asked Mow on
another MS ng about what he was recommending, which seems to be to switch
from SE 1.4.2_05 to another one.......apparently there is a security problem
with it. I will let you know his answer when I find out more. But will
save your instructions for future use.

I notice in the tech pages at Pogo that they say to uncheck the JIT part in
the Advanced Tab.....I haven't done that as yet....have you?

Cheers......Heather/Figgs

There's a confirmed vulnerability in some of the 1.4.2_xx versions:

Sun Java Plugin Arbitrary Package Access Vulnerability
http://www.idefense.com/application/...ulnerabilities

Sun fixed the issue in JRE version 1.4.2_06:
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html

No I have not unchecked the JIT. Don`t know what it is!! I believe there is
a patch available for this security thing. I recall reading about it but
alas I can`t remember where it was or is. Time for more research.
Cheers yourself ....:)

Hi, Heather,

The JIT compiler is an option for the Microsoft VM, and it's not needed.
The option is automatically cleared if you're using the Sun Java plug-in.

Regards,
Tom

This is Microsoft's description of the JIT:

You're welcome. Sun has a 1.5 release, but I've read that it's causing
problems for some users. Stay with the 1.4.2_06 release for now. It's
got you covered.

Wow......I can't keep up with you!! (G) OK.....looked at my IE
Tools/Options/Advanced and just the JIT thingie is ticked off under MS Java.

I do have the 'evil' version of the Sun one, so will download the 1.4.2_06
one as you suggested.

Tried to read the JIT page, but wasn't sure if I had to untick it or not.
Using Sun Java didn't untick it.

And when you are ready.......I opened up Firefox a day or so ago and had the
same problem with bookmarks at first. I had kept your previous posts, but
couldn't seem to find what I wanted. Besides, these Mozilla guys speak
'Greek'.......not English (G).

Anyhow.....I played with it and finally got it sorted out. It is now the
way it is in IE. Yellow Folders at the top......alphabetical after that. I
had sort of a 3 tier system using dashes.....depending on how new or
important the link was.....not to mention the ones in the yellow folders.
So that hurdle is done. Still messing with fonts and print size and that
sort of thing.

I will ping you if I have a question......or better yet, if you want to
write me via Hotmail, I will then email you from my regular email account.
That address is 'janeysmith60 at hotmail dot com'.....gone are the days when
one can safely put their email addresses out on news groups. 8-(((

Cheers.......and many thanks for all the information. I will now change
that Sun Java.

Heather

the news group while talking to her.

Off to figure out which version to download......whew!! Glad you brought
this question up. Tom knows his stuff!!

Cheers.....Heather
