Default Unexpected Defrag Problems

"flusters" wrote in message

W98SE. I am suddenly experiencing problems when running Disk Defrag. I shut
down all the usual programs and until the past 4 days have never had any
problem with this.
Now, Windows freezes when I get to between 40 and 47% defrag and I have to
reboot each time.
Any guidance or solution would be appreciated. Thanks in advance
Flusters

Besides the other suggestions, try a scandisk first.
Then a virus and spyware check.
Note, if you have SpyBot and use TeaTimer, defrag will not run properly.

You need to run SCANDISK before DEFRAG.
Both are best done in Safe Mode.

Thanks for all your suggestions.
I have always closed all programs except Systray and Explorer using
"EndItAll", disable web display, leave power settings "always on". In
addition, I disable Spyware Blaster.
Have now deleted Applog folder and a very big backup file which I had made
middle of last week ie since my previous successful Scandisk/Defrag runs.
Both Scandisk and Defrag ran to completion in Safe Mode but both refuse to
complete the task in normal mode. Scandisk did not come up with any problem
sectors but my Scandisk.ini setting for NumPasses was only 2. Will try it
overnight with a setting of 5, when I return in 3 weeks.
Otherwise, the only info I can give is that I use Zone Alarms, AVG 7,
AD-Aware SE, Spy Blaster, Crap Cleaner, CW Shredder, PC Bug Doctor,
Spybot-Search and Destroy , keep everything up to date and this problem is
recent (6 days old). Nothing has been downloaded in that time.
If anyone has further thoughts while I am away on the underlying reason or
cure, then I would be very grateful to hear.
Thanks for every thing so far.

I have been the "disable everything but the bare minimum in normal mode"
And *still* had "disk has changed" restarts.

What I hold pretty closely and seldom say is that once I had a "disk has
changed" restart of defrag in Safe Mode. :-)

Start it before you leave, it should be finished when you get back. :-)
I once did a scandisk pattern write surface check --- once.

Something is writing to the disk.
Something like a motherboard monitor (ie: system temp monitor, etc)
SpyBot has the 'teatimer' running.
Auto update program running.
Safe Mode stops most device drivers from loading.

Default Unexpected Defrag Problems

Aside from shuting down all background programs, you'll also need to
disconnect all network cables from the system. If memory serves me, someone
once posted or told me about corrupt registry problems if defrag is run from
safe mode!? Another reason you don't want to run defrag in safe mode is
that it runs ssssooooo ssssslllloooowwww.
