Short files names in 98 and XP

I used dual-boot with win3.1 and win98, and now for a couple years I
dual boot with win98SE and winXP, and this hasn't bitten me afaik.

But I thought I'd point this out to all of you, just to put MS in its
place, to give you the willies, or to explain something you might have
come across:

I should add that I went out of my way to set it up so that Eudora and
Agent would run on the very same files from both OS's. Most of the
files those good programs use are no longer than 8.3.

Checking, I see that Agent data files use numeric names, not the names
of the newsgroup. And none of it's other files have nmaes longer than
8.3.

But Eudora names mailboxe files after the mailbox name, and I actually
gave 5 mailboxes names longer than 8 characters. I shouldn't have.
But I guess Eudora always addresses these files by their long names.
(Either that or that accounts for some mailbox names that end in (1),
but I doubt it.)
