Desktop Shortcut Icons.
Hi,
Some of the icons which appear when a desktop shortcut is created (FileSendShortcut to Desktop) are attractive, but a reboot will always replace them with the MS I.E. logo. Is there a way of preventing this replacement? Thanks. __________________ Ben. |

If the shortcut is to a website, then you'll need third-party software to
preserve the icons. If it's a local shortcut on your PC, then you may need to increase the size of your IconCache - try this Delete the file 'ShellIconCache' - it's just an ordinary (non-hidden, usually) file, which can be deleted in Windows Explorer. Just use WE to find and delete the file, then reboot. If that doesn't work, then try the IconCache fix from here http://www.aumha.org/reg1.htm -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Ben B" wrote in message ... Hello Noel,
I think they are website shortcuts since they take me directly to a website. I searched for such a software to enable the preservation of those icons. Not readily located. So I have just experimented. I saved a second shortcut (to space.com)to my desktop. I opened its Properties. Under the General tab against 'Attributes' I unchecked 'Archive' and checked 'Hidden'. After several reboots the 'original'icon remains in place. What exactly have I done, Noel? Is there is risk or a loss involved? If I repeated this with all, say 20 odd, of my desktop website shortcuts will all hell break loose? vbg Ben. -----Original Message----- If the shortcut is to a website, then you'll need third- party software to preserve the icons. Noel, whilst waiting to hear from you I converted some of
my other website shortcuts. I realised that there was a fading of the original brilliant colour of the icon after the reboot. So more experimentation. I changed their attributes to 'Read Only'. The bright colour is now retained. However I do need your reassurances that Millennium can cope with this!! And I still need to know what I have done. In other words, what means Read-only, Hidden and Archive? Thanks, Noel. Ben. -----Original Message----- Hello Noel, I think they are website shortcuts since they take me directly to a website. Hello Noel,
What the 'solution' had a short life. These flavicons live only as long as I don't clear the caches. Thanks for the original response. Ben
I'm not sure this helps but it works for me. Go to the web page that you want a shortcut for. Right-click a blank area of the page, select "Create Shortcut", click OK. As a test go to http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html and try the steps above. HTH "Ben B" wrote in message ... Hello Joe,
Thanks for responding. I used your URL and was able to place a shortcut on the desktop but it had the I.E. icon logo, nothing inspirational in other words. Does it do other for you? Thanks. Hi again Ben,
Yes it does "other" for me. I just tried it again. I went to the web page and right-clicked with the cursor sitting over some of the text, selected "Create Shortcut" clicked OK and got an icon of Saturn on my Desktop. Guess you can right click anywhere on the page (except where the pointer turns into a hand). "Ben B" wrote in message ... Hello Joe, Thanks for responding. Hello Job,
It doesn't give me the icon picture. But I see I have lost my shelliconcache folder and that may explain why. I would like to ask you if these picture icons remain in place after a cold reboot and after you clear all your caches? BTW the link you first gave me takes me to a map of "The Powerful Sumatra-Andaman Islands Earthquake" not that that matters. Thanks, Job. -----Original Message----- Hi again Ben, Yes it does "other" for me. I just tried it again. The ShellIconCache folder is hidden by default, Ben - and always rebuilt on
a reboot if missing! are you using some form of resident registry/desktop tweaker?? -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Ben B" wrote in message ...
