Default ME re-install not working

Hi,
I checked through other messages but cannot find one that relates to my
situation. I was uninstalling NAV and was tinkering with the registry. I
guess I thought I knew more than I really do because it screwed up the whole
ME system. I backed up important files then booted from a floppy. I have
formatted the HD, then tried to re-install ME using both the "Format and
Recovery" options, and just the "Recovery" option. Each time the CD begins
inflating all of the software but at some point I am getting the following
message:

Inflating:_RESTORE/ARCHIVE/BKUPVX~1.14 PKUNZIPW23)
Warning! file has bad table
PKUNZIP: (W15) Warning! file fails CRC check
CDR101: Not ready reading drive M
Abort, retry, fail?

No matter what I select (Abort, retry or fail) the installation does not
continue. I tried unplugging the computer and letting it sit for several
hours. After doing this the computer ran completely through the first
installation disk and started inflating from the second disk when this error
came up again. I have a back-up set of the install disks, but using these
did not solve the problem. I am absolutely stumped! I know I should
probably dump ME, but that is not possible at the moment. Any help or
suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Have a good day,

Rob

I forgot to mention that I tried installing the CDs from both the CD drive
and the DVD drive and got the same error message.

Rob,

Your problem has nothing to do with the Win Me operating system but
instead is a problem with the Recovery CD that was supplied by the
manufacturer of your computer. These disks are not made by Microsoft but
rather the manufacturer of the PC and it is to the manufacturer I feel you
should be approaching for help with your problem. However before doing so
have you tried cleaning your recovery CD as it is possible that the error
you are seeing is due to a dirty CD.

I think the clue is here :-

CDR101: Not ready reading drive M
Abort, retry, fail?

Sounds like your CD-ROM drive is in need of a clean, particularly as it's
happening with both CD's (use a lens cleaner - available from most HiFi
stores). Worse still, the CD-ROM drive may be beginning to fail. If it is
more than two or three years old then a replacement is your best option. New
CD-ROM's are not very expensive.

On reflection, the cost of a new CD-ROM is probably not very much more than
the cost of a lens cleaner g

Ah!... In view of your second post Rob, then Mikes response sounds a better
option.

Thank you for your quick responses. I also suspected something with the CD
drive but I wanted to get other opinions before I did anything more drastic.

Your help is much appreciated.

Just a further thought, if the PC Manufacturer is not forthcoming in
replacing your "suspected Faulty CD's" and if you have access to another
(newer!) PC with CD burning/copying facilities, then it might be worth
trying to copy your "suspected Faulty CD's" onto fresh media.

The problem *may* be being caused by a combination of 'aging' CD's and
'iffy' CD-ROM's. A fresh pair of eyes *might* just be able to read them g

Good luck
