invalid hibernation partition/file????
Unfortunately, the machine won't boot to anything except the error message.
No to the floppy drive, not to the CDROM. I can't quite make any sense out of that, but it matches a lot of reports -- but the solution involves a BIOS setting that apparently doesn't exist on this machine. -- Gary S. invalid hibernation partition/file????
Thanks for the info. I think Gary is or maybe has pulled his hair out on
this one. Problem I'm having is that I can't boot to anything except BIOS. The msg "invalid hibernation partition--- Do you want to (B)oot or (P)ower down" comes up and everything locks up. I power up with a win98se boot disk(floppy) and/or win98se cd inserted but nothing happens.I've tried evey combination I can think of. The only thing I can get to is BIOS (using Del key). Set boot order floppy, cd, ide and have changed to cd first both no luck. Once I "save with changes" the system restarts and then locks up with above msg. I've tried hitting the Ctrl key, the F8 key with no luck. L. (Changed CMOS battery with no luck) "Franc Zabkar" wrote in message ... invalid hibernation partition/file????
The more I read on this the more I'm thinking that the system had WinXP.
According to one article I read (and maybe I'm wrong) is that by running WinXP, and maybe Win2k, you didn't need the HDPrep file or partition. The OS took care of the Save to File or whatever that command is. 'course now I'm stuck. Gary, Work on your garden today? "Gary S. Terhune" none wrote in message ... invalid hibernation partition/file????
On Wed, 14 May 2008 12:05:46 -0700, "Gary S. Terhune" none put
finger to keyboard and composed: Well here's where we a Everything I can find on this message, which is common to many laptops that use the same Hibernation system... All roads lead to those same instructions you already tried. The file that the message suggests you run, if you could read the whole message, is "HDPREP (or HDPREPEZ), or 'AMI Save to File Utility'". That would prepare the hard drive by creating a special partition to hold Hibernation data. But you have to prep the HD *before* you turn on the feature, and you have to turn off the feature to make it let you boot if the HD isn't prepped properly. In short, I'm not sure I can take you any farther. If there is no possible power management option that fits the bill, I have to wonder if someone tried to update the BIOS and screwed up. I dunno, nothing quite makes sense. All I know is that it's the BIOS that's holding you up, and it's holding you up because it can't find the hibernation partition. Hmmm... I suppose you could try taking out the HD, putting it into a desktop, and run the HDPREP program, then put it back in the laptop. Would be a complicated operation (gotta make sure only the laptop HD gets "prepped", which might mean having to disable the rest of the HDs in the machine and use a bootable floppy setup disk to run the HDPREP utility. But it all comes back to BIOS should have that setting, and if it doesn't, nothing makes sense. Sorry, but I don't think I could come up with anything else without the machine in front of me. I'd want to take the disk out and put it into another machine to see what partitions there are, and I'd want to positively identify the motherboard and determine if it was possible to find a BIOS version for it that has the proper settings... Just doesn't make any sense. I agree with your most recent suggestion, namely to HDPREP the hard drive in a desktop machine, although you'll have to be careful to assign enough disc space to match the total system RAM plus video RAM, as explained in the HDPREP documentation. Here are some potentially useful utilities including Hdprep and a BIOS flasher: http://download.gericom.com/NOTEBOOK...RIVER/Utility/ Drivers: http://download.gericom.com/NOTEBOOK...-340S8/DRIVER/ BIOS updates: http://download.gericom.com/NOTEBOOK...ne-340S8/BIOS/ The "BIOS update" IMG files appear to be images of bootable floppy diskettes. After writing these images to separate diskettes, there were several files including BIOS.ROM (256KB) which appeared to be the BIOS images. The ROM files contained the text strings listed below. Note that "1AAOG008" appears in the OP's BIOS ID string, as does "9999". This suggests to me that the OP's machine probably still has its original BIOS. I believe the info in the "$BID$9999" blocks will be reported by the BIOS/POST if the Insert key is held down during power-up. ================================================== ================= UN340G BAT0 NiMH OEM UN340G BAT0 LiON OEM American Megatrends Inc. 062710 07/15/97 Gericom 1AAJG 1.0 American Megatrends Inc. 340S8 1.0 Uknown Chassis Manufacture Version 1.00 Socket 370 Internal Cache Internal Cache ROW-0 ROW-1 PCI1 PCI2 PCI3 PCI4 PCI5 ISA1 ISA2 SMBIOS Support from AMI Tested by James USB Def System Management BIOS from Atlanta SMBIOS from AMI English Traditional Chinese Simplified Chinese Japanese $BID$9999 1AAOG008 0B 0296.00 $_CORE0296.00 Flash: W29C020 DIM: PCI PCI Bridge VUMA PnP NVRAM flash ACPI: S3 S4 USB: OHCI SMBIOS: 2.2 GPNV flash Bootblock: Floppy INT13: EDD1.1 S.M.A.R.T. Also read to take out or disable the HD and see if floppy/CD will work.
Wil try and disable HD and see what happens. Will report back later today. Some of the new suggestion are starting to get above my head. Will take them one at a time and see what I can do. I'm leary about taking the HD out and putting it in one of my 'working' systems. Again, starting to push my knowledge level. No, actually past it by now. ""I believe the info in the "$BID$9999" blocks will be reported by the BIOS/POST if the Insert key is held down during power-up"" Heald down the Ins key with no luck. The only key that works during bootup is the Del key to enter BIOS. Also disabled the HD in BIOS, still no luck. Shows the floppy and CD drive. Set BIOS bootup(1st), floppy then CD(2nd) and disabled IDE(0) (3rd). The BIOS shows CD drive while, in fact, it has a dvd-rom drive inserted. Make any difference? I have a cd-rom drive that came with system but not sure how to replace, if needed. "Franc Zabkar" wrote in message ... On Wed, 14 May 2008 12:05:46 -0700, "Gary S.
