Dual O/s: Windows 98 startup problems
I have a dual O/S on my PC (1.5 G RAM): XP Home and Win 98. I had recently
upgraded my XP edition to Home. Now when I try to start up Windows 98, it gives an error as follows: "Not sufficient memory. Please edit your Autoexec.bat or remove entries from Congi.sys and restart". I cannot even start it in Safe mode, as it gives the same problem. Please help. |

Dual O/s: Windows 98 startup problems
Here's some info on ram you might find helpful:
768 mb or more of ram: "Out of Memory" Errors with Large Amounts of RAM Installed [Q253912] http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;Q253912 This article contains instructions which basically say: add this line in system.ini, under [vcache]: MaxFileCache=512000 *************************** 1 gb or more of ram: Error Message: Insufficient Memory to Initialize Windows [Q184447] http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;Q184447 *************************** 1.5 gb or more of ram: Computer May Reboot Continuously with More Than 1.5 GB of RAM [Q304943] http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;Q304943 -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "Sohil Laad" wrote in message ... You will need to boot your Windows 98 to "Command Prompt Only" and add the following lines to the system.ini file: 1. Add to the existing [vcache] section: MaxFileCache=512000 2. Add to the existing [386enh] section: MaxPhysPage=40000 The effects of these two entries will be that Windows 98 will only see 1 gb of the installed RAM. That is the most likely cause of the problems that you are experiencing. Windows 98 is known to have problems on computers with more than 1 gb of RAM and has never been known to operate successfully on any computer with more than 1.5 gb of RAM (unless MaxPhysPage is used). Also Windows will be prevented from attempting to map more than 512 mb of RAM for use as disk cache, which it might otherwise attempt to do. This is something that would cause problems when running applications but probably not at startup. If the problems still persist then try reducing the MaxPhysPage entry to 30000 or even 20000. There is no need to experiment with different values for the MaxFileCache entry. Good luck Ron Martell Duncan B.C.
