icons that appear when an application is running
I don't know how to explain this one, but here goes. I am running windows 98
second edition. When I open an application such as internet explorer or microsoft excel, normally an icon is displayed at the botton of the screen for each application that is opened and running. The icons are usually displayed between the start button and the quick launch icons (or whatever else is displayed on the screen at the time). Anyway, on this particular machine, no icons are displayed, no matter how many applications are running at the time. It could be one application or several applications. Either way, no icons are displayed. What I would like to know is as follows: 1. What is causing this problem. 2. How do I fix this problem 3. What is the area between the start button and the quick launch icons called. Edward Letendre. |

If applications don't minimize to the Taskbar, then try this:

In its entirely, that is called the Taskbar. Standard setup has Start button at
far left and System Tray at the far right. An number of "Tool Bars" can be added to the Taskbar, Quick Launch being the most commonly known. "Buttons" representing open windows are displayed in whatever is left of the Taskbar, and when there are too many to fit, a pair of arrows, Up & Down, appears at the right of the buttons. Sounds to me like perhaps your Quick Launch bar is occupying all of the available space. Right-click somewhere in that area, on any blank spot, and a menu will appear. You'll know it's the right one when you see Toolbars near the top. Hove over that, then move the cursor into the sub-menu and click on Quick Launch to de-select it. Test, now, to see if you can see program buttons. If so, you can enable the Quick Launch bar again. Unless you "Lock the Taskbar" (another option on that right-click menu), fine vertical lines appear at the left of each section of the Taskbar. You can use the mouse to drag those lines to resize the toolbar or even to make it "jump another, always remembering that the Start button is fixed on the left and System Tray is fixed on the right. -- Gary S.
