Default Install on laptop with only 1 drive

I'm not sure how to edit the autoexec.bat file to include
the loading of the CD-Rom driver. Can you provide the
command and where should I put it within autoexec.bat?

Also, I copied the startup disk to C: and then tried to
remove all instances of a:\ from both *.bat files. (I used
another computer to edit the files.) The computer then
indicated "Invalid system disk. Replace the disk and
press any key."
Any suggestions?

This might be easier (assuming that you have another
computer to create the disk), if you create a boot disk by
running the FAT32EBD utility from the
\tools\mtsutil\fat32ebd folder on the Win98 CD.

Edit is on this disk and is not in a .cab file like it is
on the Startup disk created in Control Panel, Add/remove
programs. If you copy all of the files from this disk to
your c: drive, Edit will be among them. You can then edit
the Autoexec.bat file to load mscdex.exe from the c: drive
rather than a:.

Another thing that might be even easier is this. Once you
are booted with your CD drive installed, type this from
the c:\ prompt:

Mscdex.exe /d:mscd001

If Mscdex.exe is on the root, this should load the cd
extensions needed to load the Win98 CD. To simplify
things, I would then create a Win98 folder on your c:
drive and copy the contents of the Win98 folder on the CD
to it.
Then run setup from the Win98 folder on your c: drive.

Before you copy the floppy to the C drive, do either
FORMAT C: /S
or
FORMAT C:
SYS C:

You may need to start FDISK and confirm that the primary DOS partition on
the C drive is active. You might also need to do FDISK /MBR.

Make sure the entire contents of the floppy is copied to C:\, then edit
AUTOEXEC.BAT in C:\ to change every A: reference to C:. This is safer than
simply deleting the A: reference. Then search for other BAT files (they
depend on the source of your startup floppy) and make the same changes in
any others you find. If you are using a proper startup floppy (eg,
www.bootdisk.com) you should not need to modify anything to get the CD ROM
drivers loaded.

Your Win98 CD may be bootable. Boot to the BIOS and temporarily put
the CDRom first in the boot sequence. e.g. CDrom, A:\, HDD.
Then try booting with it.

If no go try this:
Using the other computer copy Oakcdrom.sys from the Win98 Startup
diskette to a floppy.
Double click the Ebd.cab file on the Win98 Startup diskette to open
it then right click Mscdex.exe and extract to the floppy. Put the
floppy in the Laptop and copy both files to C:\.

To avoid confusion I would temporarily rename your present
Autoexec.bat and Config.sys files and create new ones for this
purpose.

Then put this line in your autoexec.bat file:
C:\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD001
And this line in your Config.sys file.
C:\Oakcdrom.sys /D:MSCD001

This works for many CDroms but not all. It gives me Dos support for
both my DVD and CDRW drives.

Reboot then run Setup on the Win98 CD. Or, better yet copy the Win98
folder on the CD to your HDD. Like this:

From the C:\ prompt enter:
MD C:\Win98cd
Copy D:\Win98\*.* C:\Win98cd
Where D: is your CDrom drive.
Then run Setup from the Win98cd folder and you won't need your
CDrom. Whenever Windows needs something from the CD it will go there
instead.
