Default Media Frenzy

Forum;

Well, perhaps "frenzy" isn't exactly the case;.... more of a fussy, but...
I don't seem to be able to run the Windows Media Player 7.1 on my system. It
can connect to sites, but everything goes painfully herky-jerky when it
tries to play video. I had this oldish, second hand computer given to me...
my first exposure to the internet & pc's, and I am ditzing around seeing how
it works.

My processor is a Pentium, with 16 MB of hard drive and 133 MHz as a clock.
Oh yes, and it has Windows 98 (OEM) I/E & O/E 6 in it.

I am wondering if this computer is too out-of-date to do the on-line video
thing.

While the computer may be restricted in terms of its video display ability,
the likely cause of the jerkiness is a slow internet connection.

If you download the movie first and play it using the hard disk copy, is it
still jerky?

Hi Jeff;

I dunno. I didn't get past trying to play what was offered at the site.
It was on a link to the NASA, Cassini/Huygens, Iapetus Flyby Animation, ...
I think the screen stat report said it was transmitting @ 1184 KG/sec.

I am on HS Cable/Modem. My last check on d/l speed indicated the following
info, which is gibberish to me:

Receive Window (RWIN): 8760Window (default setting) : recommend Choose RWIN
between 5840 and 7300

Test 146000 byte download
29261 bytes/sec transfer rate: 234 kbits/sec ;transfer efficiency: 100%

Jeff;
The Media app is a new experience for me. I'm not sure what is meant by
"download it first".... "hard disc copy". I'm used to just clicking on a
site and the machinery downloads to my screen. I have an option to 'file'
it, but as I remember, at the time, my Media Player was doing the 'stagger
step' and I'm not sure how that would actually download.

.....any chance you could interpret the test results in my previous post? It
seems to me I should try to get some understanding of this. If the MP really
isn't chummy with my hardware, I'll just forget about it.

I have never seen any of the information you describe, but that might be
because I don't view videos on line. I always download anything I want to
look at.

What happens if you view this site with a friend's computer?

You could try asking in a MP newsgroup, such as
microsoft.public.multimedia.windows.mediaplayer
