Windows Media Player (Active Movie Window)
I am trying to play a *.wmv file in Windows Media Player 7.1 for Windows 98.
Every time I open it up in media player, I can hear the sound but see the movie. Also, a window pops up with its title 'Active Movie Window', which is also plain black. I've looked for new codecs etc. online but there isn't much for W98. I downloaded this update thing for WMP7.1, but it didn't install properly (I think it needed higher than W98). Can anyone help? Thanks Daniel |

There are no codecs for Windows 98... in fact there are no codecs for Windows XP... There are just codecs. And this is a well known nightmare. Sometimes it will depend on what you are trying to playback. Some movies are plain broken. Some versions of ..wmv format will only play on specific versions of Windows Media Player (for example I have a bunch that don't play video in the latest WMP version, but work fine in version 7). You have various packs of codecs that can be found on the internet ("Nimo codec pack" for example), find one that works for you and if you can't, find a diffirent movie, sorry. I am running Windows 98SE here with Windows Media Player 9 (you might want to try installing 9 too, look under system requirements) and Kazaa's codec pack (I deleted kazaa but kept the codec pack) and most movies work fine here, even tho when we tried to install the same on a diffirent PC, it behaved radically diffirent there, so it obviously depends on the hardware too. Good luck with it heh. -- Model: INFJ Primary function: Coprocessor Secondary function: Cluster commander Yes I'm a therian: http://www.wikitherian.org "Who needs a soul when you can make other people happy?" |
