Default unable to install antivirus and service packs

I recently re-installed windows me on an old computer. When I tried to
install anti-virus and the service packs available for me, I keep getting
error messages saying that I need a newer version of windows installer. I
can't seem to get much of anything accomplished....feel like I'm going around
in circles....the anti virus won't install saying that there are corrupt
files in the AVG download, and I get an error 1006 when I try to install
avast! Is there someplace to get all the updates I need (I've already run
windows update and installed everything it would let me install...no
directx9....wouldn't work because of installer and no media player...same
issues) Is there any help for this or should I just give up and dump the
computer?

AVG - ensure that you are trying to install a Win Me compatible version
the last of which is I believe 7.5, Version 8 cannot be installed on Win
Me.

When you reinstalled Win Me was this a "clean" install or an install over
a previous system? Given your problems I'd be very tempted to start over
again, format the hard drive, or at least the C drive if your hard drive
is partitioned into more than one drive, and then clean install Win Me.
You shouldn't be experiencing the problems you are reporting following a
clean install.

When installing updates from the Windows Update site do a few at a time
starting with installing the updated Windows Update software that is
offered when you first visit the site. You should now be offered around
24 "critical updates and service packs" and around 10 others. Unselect
all bar the System Restore update (possibly second in list), download,
install and reboot. Return to the Windows Update site, let it scan your
PC and now unselect all offered updates except Internet Explorer 6 SP1.
Accept the IE6 EULA, select the typical install and proceed. It's about a
12.5MB download in total. When complete reboot. On returning to the
Windows Update site you should now be offered around 23 critical updates
and 45 optional including about 34 language packs. Note that when now
attempting to access the Windows Update site the redirector no longer
seemed to work and I had to manually add "v4." to the front of
"windowsupdate.microsoft.com" to gain access.

Now install the remainder of the critical updates and those non critical
that you require but only do five or six at a time noting that some such
as DirectX 9c and WMP have to be installed as single updates with no
others selected at the same time. Note also that installing some updates
can cause further updates to be offered, for example Direct X (1) and WMP9
(2).

Please Note I have just done the above running a clean install of Win Me
that had no previous patches installed and had never previously connected
to the internet. I met none of the problems you mention so it is quite
definitely worth retrying on a clean install of Win Me.

should I just give up and dump the computer?

Your decision entirely and should be based on what you hope to do with the
computer once Win Me is installed. Remember that the machine is probably
seven or eight years old and a lot of development has taken place since
then and a PC of that age will be somewhat limited in what it can do
although it should still be fine for browsing, e-mail, document
preparation and other basic office procedures but not that good with games
other than those of a similar vintage. Remember also that much modern
software cannot be install on older Win 9x systems such as Win Me and
requires as a minimum an NT based system such as XP or even Vista.

Thanks so much for responding. I bought this computer at a police auction. The
hard drive was wiped clean, so yes, it was a clean install. As far as AVG is
concerned, I did go all the way back to the oldest version I could find, with
no luck.
My hard drive is not partitioned, so I can go back and start over, It's just
that I had to fight with bellsouth (internet provider) to help me get
internet setup without paying the $139 they wanted for tech support for win
me. I did install most of the updates a few at a time, except for the ones
that said they had to be installed alone. As far as the order I installed
them, I really can't tell you, I just started at the top and went down.
Critical first, then the rest without the language updates. I only want to be
able to check my email from this computer without having to go all the way to
the basement to my office. My kids have already been on this computer once
they realized it had internet, so I may already have viruses, or worse.
Thanks again for your help. Any suggestions other than re-install?

Okay...somehow I have managed to get AVG 7.5 installed...don't know how I did
it but after several re-starts it's there and working fine with all updates
in place...now I just need to get the rest of the MS updates to install and I
should be okay!

No since it could well be quicker. There is no reason why you are seeing
Windows Installer errors when installing updates from the Win Me Windows
Update site if you started with a clean system.
