Default Password Protection Not Working???

I decided to go to the control panel and setup a password for my office
computer. Now when I reboot or start fresh a box appears asking for the
password. Then I noticed (by accident) that if I click on the cancel button
on the password box the computer continues the boot and I'm in and have
access to everything.

If the password is not input, should that not let anyone in???
Why, by clicking on cancel, anyone can get in???
What's the purpose for asking for the password???

Help is appreciated.
Thanks!!!

Windows ME is not designed as a secure operating system. The logon is
useful so that different users can set their preferences or to access
network shares but unlike NT based systems it is not designed to keep
users out. Set a password at the BIOS level if you want to lock the pc.

As has already been implied elsewhere, WinMe does not have a very secure
password system. If you want something a bit more secure without setting
your BIOS password, check-out Doug Knox's "Secure Your Computer" free
utility at the following URL:-
http://www.dougknox.com/security/validated.htm

WARNING!! Be sure to read his recommendation!!

HTH and good luck

Thanks, I'll look over the suggested website.

In case I want to use the BIOS for ease of setting or whatevver, is the BIOS
hard to change and pretty much secure?

How do I get to the BIOS?

Thanks!!

You might find the following site helpful :-
http://www.dewassoc.com/support/bios/bios_password.htm

But FWIW, I've found Doug Knox's solution quite satisfactory.

STOP... Do you own the office? If not then you are potentially looking at a
firing. I'm going to edit the subject line to see if someone will follow up
on this because I'm due to sleep soon but, well, do NOT risk your job unless
that PC belongs (really) to you.

Thanks all - Everyone was a help!!!

In answer to Galen...Yes, I own the computer and the business, office etc.
Thank you for bringing that up. This will help others who read this thread.

I looked into the suggested application by Mart, but that link and any other
I traced down brought me to "page cannot be found". I did eventually find
information on Doug Knox, but he mentioned that changing the BIOS was the
most secure.

By this time, I found my manufacture's papers and was able to get into the
BIOS. This worked out well because the BIOS not only had a password
protecting anyone from getting into the BIOS but also had a password
protecting anyone from getting into the computer from a fresh boot.

So again, that you all for your help. All took part in steering me in the
direction I needed to go.
