Default Internet explorer update/reinstall problems

Long story short, I had a backdoor bdd(virus-adware) infection on my pc and
had to reinstall Windows ME. Now With the help of norton I can safely get on
the internet using IE 5.5, However when I try to up grade to IE6 it tells me
that I have to close some programs and try again. I have closed everything
expcept explorer, but no success.

I am running the following:
Dell 4600
Windows ME
Trial versions of Norton 2004 antivirus and personal firewll.

Uninstall ALL Norton products first. Norton products do NOT play
nice with Win ME.
Then create a folder in My Documents and name it IEBak. Go to
Program Files\Internet Explorer\Uninstall Information
and move all of the files in there to IEBak. Update to IE6.
If the update is successfull delete the IEBak folder. If not, move
the files back to their original location.

eTrust, in conjunction with MS, is offering a one year free trial of
eTrust EZ Armor http://www.my-etrust.com/microsoft/
Or, try out NOD AV and download Zone Alarm ( the free edition )
