Have a look here and see if anything helps, but you may have caused more
problems reinstalling ME over the top if you didn't take suitable steps beforehand. Explorer has caused an error in SHELL 32.DLL http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winme/1087773335 Joan Jonty wrote: I am having a lot of problems with the Shell32.dll Anytime I try to open IE or maybe open folders, from searches. Such symptoms can be the result of mistakenly attempting to reinstall ME
over itself without first reverting back to IE5.5 - the resulting 'Version Soup' is almost impossible to repair, and the only sure way known is to completely remove IE and then reinstall whichever version you require. Instructions for this process are here http://www.crashfixpc.com/ReInIE.htm Please post back if you need more details - preferably before attempting the process!!g -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2006, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.crashfixpc.com/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Jonty" wrote in message ... Thank you to Joan and Noel for guidance.
There is a fair amount of considered work to be done. I shall battle my way through your manuals and report back. PS: what do you think of BitTorrent the application? And is it still OK to use v5.25 Sygate Personal Firewall? or has its move to Norton spelled the end of another triumph of computing for the masses? I'm off to roll-up my sleeves ... thanks again JonT "Jonty" wrote in message ... I am having a lot of problems with the Shell32.dll Anytime I try to open IE or maybe open folders, from searches. BitTorrent is pretty good - but beware teh stuff that you get from it, as
there are lots of malware files dying to be downloaded! As far as firewalls go, if you're using a NAT router for your internet connection, then you don;t need a software mofirewall - if you're using dialup, then mostly good practice is sufficient - if you're using a USB ADSL Modem, then any firewall is better than none (and Sygate is supposed to be pretty good). The last software firewall I used (outside the WIndows firewall in XP) was Kerio 2.15 - so YMMV , widely! I'd give Sygate one more update - and then say goodbye. Norton/Symantec has never improved any application beyond the prior-planned update, and usually they just buy the company to eliminate the competition, or to incorporate (in the most bloating way possible) one particular pice of technology. After that, it's downhill all the way! -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2006, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.crashfixpc.com/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Jonty" wrote in message ... PS: what do you think of BitTorrent the application?
Have a look at BitTornado (http://www.bittornado.com/) but stick with 0.3.7 or 0.3.8, and perhaps also Azureus (http://azureus.sourceforge.net/) which is a Java BT client.. -- Mike Maltby Jonty wrote: Thank you to Joan and Noel for guidance. I am quite concerned about removing OE6 as recommended by
Noel, and how it will affect previous Message History, Address Book and prior email messages & email rules etc. - or are these left-behind for the next install ? If not, can I keep copies of the existing dbx archives or other Data Files that contain this info? JonT |

You can (and possibly should) back up your DBX files to CD - they can then
be copied back to the HD and imported after you get everything sorted out -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2006, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.crashfixpc.com/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Jonty" wrote in message ... Good to have a permanent .dbx backup, they can be lost so easily otherwise. It's also a damn good idea to create a folder (just for convenience) then open OE, open the Inbox, highlight all messages then drag them to the new folder. Then burn the folder. This way the messages are also saved individually and you don't have to re-set OE to use the old .dbx files before you can access just one message. Just click on the saved (.eml) message and it'll open in whichever OE you have at that time. If the messages are that important to you. You can of course do the same with Sent Items and any other folder you save e-mails in. Otherwise, here are the contents of a simple batch file (which will wrap, so I'm also attaching it as a txt file): @echo off cls REGEDIT /E OE_WAB.reg "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\WAB" REGEDIT /E OE_Settings.reg "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express" REGEDIT /E OE_Accounts.reg "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Account Manager" REGEDIT /E OE_IDs.reg "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities" cls exit cls ....which if run will export the necessary data to four reg files. The reg files, if d-clicked later, will put the OE settings back. I do this frequently and wouldn't be without it. Shane |
