KB911562 UPDATE
Thank you very much Noel for the information.
DUH on my part regarding I.E. I have just been overwhelmed lately in getting my PC to function as it had been prior to the 4/11's release of KB911562 and KB912812. Thank you again! ~ K "Noel Paton" wrote: Kathie The update status WRT the MDAC updates is perfectly as expected in your circumstances. The update is not a patch for IE, and therefore won't appear in the AboutIE listing. Updates do not always appear in the Add/Remove listing - usually because such updates are not designed to be removable, for a number of (good) reasons. -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2006, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.crashfixpc.com/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Kathie" wrote in message ... Hello Mike, I want to give you further information regarding the automatic update that I wrote previously to you about, for which I have yet to receive a reply. As of now, 4/27/06, the status of my system according to the Windows update site indicates "There are no critical updates available at this time." As I mentioned to you, I got a successful install message at my desktop for the "automatic update" for KB911562 on 4/26/06. However, when I went to the Windows update site and viewed my installation history, it shows that this failed (source: automatic update). I want to note the descrition: "Security Update for Microsoft Data Access Components 2.8 (KB911562)" Whereby, on 4/25/06, the installation history shows there was a successful update (source: web site) and note the description: "Security Update for Microsoft Data Access Components 2.8 Service Pack 1 (KB911562) " Comments? And to recap previous posts of this thread, I installed on 4/25/06 MDAC 2.8 SP1 and then installed KB911562 in order to allow my HP scanner software to function correctly (without script errors). As the installation history shows, KB911562's source was from web site. I do not find any reference to KB911562 in control panel, add/remove programs nor in "about I.E.". Is this normal? Looking forward to your pearls of wisdom. Thank you! ~ K "Mike M" wrote: the site knows which version to install on my PC? Kathie, In a word, yes. Not that there haven't occasionally been problems with updates, the 911562 update for MDAC 2.8 being a prime example. When I get the notification (globe symbol in system tray) and click on it to take me to the windows update site; and have the scan performed; the site knows which version to install on my PC? I have been using this functionality as opposed to my manually searching for the update. Your information is excellent, since I could easily download the incorrect update had I searched manually for it. I will await your reply, confirming most likely what I believe to be true: using the windows update site, it will know which update to use. |

KB911562 UPDATE
Thanks Mike for the explanation.
Regarding understanding my problems: I just thought that I needed to be concerned seeing the status of "failed" for the KB911562 AU install... However I am not to worry according to your and Noel's helpful responses. And DUH on my part regarding not seeing the KB911562 listed in I.E. I do a double g g I gather from what both you and Noel had to say is that I should not be reminded by Windows automatic update to do the KB911562 install. If this is so, I will not miss seeing the windows update reminder "globe" in my system tray every day!!!! I thank you again for all of the great help and feedback. And I am happy to report that I have been devoid of the KERNEL32.DLL messages!! Take care, ~ K "Mike M" wrote: Kathie, I'm unclear as to what problems you are now having. I do not find any reference to KB911562 in control panel, add/remove programs This is normal.. Like yourself I have no entry for KB911562 in Add/Remove Programs nor do I for many other hotfixes. nor in "about I.E.". Is this normal? Yes, and it's not really surprising since 911562 has nothing to do with Internet Explorer. g What I suspect may have been the cause for the failed "Security Update for Microsoft Data Access Components 2.8 (KB911562)" install via AU is that this came down slowly and that in the meantime you had installed MDAC 2.8 SP1 and subsequently the MDAC 2.8 SP1 version of KB911562 from the WU site. -- Mike Maltby Kathie wrote: Hello Mike, I want to give you further information regarding the automatic update that I wrote previously to you about, for which I have yet to receive a reply. KB911562 UPDATE
Kathie,
You're managing to confuse me just a little. Are you saying that AU (Automatic Update) is still offering you KB911562? If so then something could be wrong since you say you have installed this patch for MDAC 2.8 SP1 and that it is not being offered to you on visiting the Windows Updates (WU) site. AU should only offer you the critical subset of the patches offered by the WU site although sometimes it would appear that critical means different things to different people (for example in XP with Office installed, and using the Microsoft Update site rather than Windows Update, being offered the Outlook Junk mail filter and an Office Update for the new Turkish Lira symbol). And I am happy to report that I have been devoid of the KERNEL32.DLL messages!! And that is as it should be. Well done! -- Mike Maltby Kathie wrote: Thanks Mike for the explanation.
