Default computer reboots into safe mode

Sometimes our computer reboots automatically into safe mode when
starting from a cold boot. When it does this, we also get the message
that a file, fdce.vxd is missing and that the registry or win.ini refers
to it. I tried searching for it in win.ini and the registry and deleted
it from the registry but we still get this message when booting into
safe mode. This doesn't happen in normal mode.

Would appreciate any help with getting rid of this message and
preventing the automatic reboot into safe mode.

Thanks.

Because I can find almost no references to fdce.vxd when doing a search online, I
suggest you approach this as a possible malware problem.

Update your anti-virus app and then run a full-system virus scan.

Use CWShredder, the CoolWeb removal tool, available he
http://aumha.org/downloads/cwshredder.exe
Close all browser windows and open apps, start CWShredder and click the Fix button.

Install Ad-Aware SE free Personal Edition, start it, click its 'Check for Updates'
link in the app to install updates, then use it to scan your system, and remove what
it finds.
Ad-Awa

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html

Install SpywareBlaster:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2859.html
Click the link in the app to check for and install updates, then click to 'Enable
all protection'.
Update at least weekly.

Download, unzip, and run Hijack This from he
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html
Unzip to a folder other than your Desktop or the Temp folder, doubleclick
HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log"
button.
Press that, save the log somewhere you can find it (Desktop, My Documents, or
similar).
Most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.

Copy the log files and paste them into a new post at one of these forums:
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/,
http://castlecops.com/forum67.html

In your post, please state your problem clearly and what you've done so far to fix
it.

The folks there will tell you what to remove.

See the "housekeeping" you should complete before you post your log:

Do as Glee said, especially if you've spelt that correctly. Also...

(1)
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;q143283
W98 Defaults to Safe Mode
It says, delete "Wnbootng.sts", if you have it...

(a) START button, Settings, Folder Options, View tab.
Bolt "Show all files" & UNcheck "Hide file extensions..."
(b) "START button, FIND, F/F, Wnbootng.sts". (Should be in C:\Windows.)
R-Clk it, & select "Delete"

(2) There is a branch entitled "Now that I've installed my program, Windows 98 starts only in Safe mode." at "START, Help, Contents, Troubleshooting, Windows 98 Troubleshooters, DirectX section". (If you encounter blank Help screens there, then...
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q188867
Troubleshooting Windows 98 Startup Problems. This article contains a
link to what it says is the equivalent of the Windows Help
Troubleshooters...
http://support.microsoft.com/support/windows/tshoot
That's it.)

I'm wondering whether you have two separate issues.

When the PC boots normally, all the kernel drivers (*.vxd files) are
loaded. Any app that requires these drivers will then find them. In
safe mode, some drivers will not be loaded, causing any dependent apps
to complain. I'd look for clues in the list of Kernel Drivers in the
Software Environment of msinfo32.exe. You could also check this
registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\VxD

Once you have determined which app requires fdce.vxd, you may still be
no wiser as to the reason for your spontaneous safe mode reboots. All
you will know for sure is that a certain autostarting app requires a
driver that is loaded during a normal boot but not during a safe mode
boot.

Sometimes you can boot all the way to Normal Mode with no problem? Other times it won't get there, but you get an error message that fdce.vxd is missing & an auto-reboot to Safe Mode? Is that it? What Registry key do you delete it from? And it comes back?

Sounds like it is a driver file. Can it be you have set up User & Hardware Profiles? Can it be happening only when you boot to a certain User?

Maybe look in "Control Panel, System, Device Manager tab" for a red/yellow ?/!, & report back.

Also...

START button, Find, F/F
Named............... *.inf (That's asterisk-dot-inf)
Containing text.... fdce.vxd
Look in.............. C:\Windows\Inf

This will look inside each .inf for that driver name. Did it find one?

Sorry, but for some reason outlook express is not adding the for
quoted text (although it's enabled) so I'm using these lines to indicate
my response.

It starts booting and then reboots into safe mode and then brings up the
error message. I don't know what folder it was in but it had its own
folder named FDCE which I deleted. I think it does come back because I
went thru this in the past once but I don't remember if I deleted the
folder.

There is only one user.

___
There are no red/yellow icons in the device manager.

Thanks.

PCR: Look in the folder "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32" for a mention of "fdce.vxd". That too could auto-install it each boot. Look in sub-folders to that one, too.

| Thanks.
