Help: Modem will not connect at maximum
I reformated my dear mothers machine and re-installed windows for her...
first i installed xp for her and her computer ran very slowlyand so i reverted back to Win Me for her...however, prior to the re-install her modem would connect at the maximum speeds possible... then with xp the modem would always connect at low speeds like 12000, 14000 and 16000, no higher when the modem is capable of 56K...with th reinstall of Me, the modem would do the same thing.... i ripped the modem out and put in the modem i had in my computer and the computer then would install it for Com3... the modem should be for com1..the computer tried to dial but would never find a dial tone... so i gave up on that modem...it wouldnt not let me change the com port it was assigned to... Anyway after reinstalling yet again so i could let it use the original modem (mysteriously on com1) the speeds remained slow.. I am at a loss why I cannot get this modem to connect to her ISP any faster. Help is appreciated. regards, Clint |

It would be VERY unusual for a modem to be COM1 - since that is usually
reserved for the onboard serial ports. there's not enough information in the rest of the post to be able to diagnose anything - reformat and reinstall, and make a careful note of ANY and ALL error messages - then post back with that information. -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj A Happy Xmas, and a Merry New Year to everyone!
