I'm having a similar problem with the mplayer upgrade except after I removed
the
upgrade that was in the add/remove list I still needed to run setup to
re-install the Win98se Operating System to correct the Port conflict that is
occuring which is why your computer will only boot-up in safe-mode! If your
Computer has it's sound circuitry built in the motherboard, especially if
it's c-media,there's a conflict problem with the Microsoft Mplayer program
and you'd do better either using the mplayer software written for your
specific chipset or you could try Realplayer which works well with sound on
board systems!
