Can't run a MPEG video file in Windows 98SE ....
The machone in question has a Pentium 1 and a 64Mb RAM and, although it sees
the relevent video file as a .cda type, it can't run it. Running the file starts up the CD player application but this application doesn't see the file at all. I suspect that a new application is needed, as my XP machine sees the file as a video MPEG and runs it without any problems. Is there a "free" application availabel so that the Win 98SE machine can run the video file? |

The .cda files are representations of CD audio tracks and do not contain the
actual pulse code modulation (PCM) information. You cannot play the file if you copy a .cda file from the CD-ROM to your hard disk. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "Bomber" wrote in message ... Jeff, thanks for the reply but not sure what the PCM component of the video
is. I do have the CD and, as well as the 146Mb MPEG Video file, there is a 3kb application file. I'm presuming that this is the PCM componenet you mention, as the video works on my Windows XP machine. The Windows 98SE machine can see both files on the CD but sees the MPEG Video file as a .cda type instead. Do you know why the 98SE can't use the CD whereas the XP machine can? |

Are you trying to play a CDA file, or are you trying to play a CD? You
can't play a CDA file because it doesn't actually contain any video or audio data (that's what the PCM information is). You can play a CD. When you do, it's actually the CDA file that is being played, but this is quite invisible to you. The only time you see the CDA file is if you copy it to the hard drive, or if you look at the CD as a data CD, which, of course, it isn't. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "Bomber" wrote in message ... Are you trying to play a CDA file, or are you trying to play a CD?
Have tried both!! I've tried playing the CD and this starts up the CD Player application but as if I had used a shortcut to start the application with no data specified, rather than clicking on the data file which in turn starts the application with that file being the data. When this didn't work, I copied the two visible files from the CD to the hard drive of the 98SE machine and this didn't seem to make any differerence ........ |

What CD Player application are you using? Is there an option to tell it to
play the CD, rather than attempting to open the files? If the CD is recordable, are you sure it has been created properly? -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "Bomber" wrote in message ...
