Internet Explorer Tools/options not available
I originally posted this as a problem with Windows
Explorer but while talking with the person using the machine, realized he was talking about IE instead. So the same question remains - with a little tweakin' I have a stand alone 98 box that has been working fine for some time. Suddenly, I started getting the following message when I try to go to Tools/Options in Internet Explorer: This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer I've search through system policies and don't see anything looks like it would affect Internet Explorer in this way. I also don't know why or how any restrictions could have been set. Are there any spyware/worm type creations out there that could do this? Can anyone help?? |

I am not sure why you posted here instead of an IE group but, yes,
parasites can do this. Use Regedit.exe and search for NoBrowserOptions and remove it. It is most likely to be here (but not necessarily) HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Inte rnet Explorer\Restrictions If you are unfamiliar with Regedit, then ensure you know how to restore your Registry in case of error and it is a good to export any key before deleting. Check the startup (Start-Run-MSCONFIG-Startup tab) for any unknown items if it is reset on reboot. You might try this snippet from Mike Burgess first if you use SpyBot: 'Did you by chance run SpyBot's Immunize feature? If so, you can unlock by unchecking the option to "Protect IE Control Panel" ' ....Alan -- Alan Edwards, MS MVP W95/98 Systems In microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion, "Elly" wrote: I originally posted this as a problem with Windows Explorer but while talking with the person using the machine, realized he was talking about IE instead. I was pretty sure that was the case, but you specifically stated that the problem was in WINDOWS Explorer, so I let it ride. I should have confirmed my suspicion. Anyway, have a look at this Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 216583 Clicking "Internet Options" on the Tools menu returns error message http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=216583 |

As Alan posted, HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Inte rnet
Explorer\Restrictions Delete the "NoBrowserOptions" value, and reboot. It may exist here instead: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Int ernet Explorer\Restrictions or HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Policies\Microsoft\In ternet Explorer\Restrictions A simple way to do all this, if you have Windows Scripting host installed, is to go to Doug Knox' site and download his script to fix it: http://www.dougknox.com/security/scr...strictions.htm Right-click his "Download" link, click Save Target As from the menu that appears, and save it in a folder of your choice. Then double-click it to toggle the restrictions on or off. Hope this helps.... -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "Elly" wrote in message ... I didn't see the question. If you have Spybot S&D or a
tweaking tool like FreshUI? Those two programs have settings in them where you can lock out IE properties. Which would bring up such a message about IE settings being locked. -----Original Message----- I originally posted this as a problem with Windows Explorer but while talking with the person using the machine, realized he was talking about IE instead. Yes, I mentioned that it my reply to Elly's first post...this is her second post on
the subject. She never responded to the replies in her first post, nor here either, I see. :-\ -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "ppoatt" wrote in message ... Thanks for the input - I didn't get a chance to look at
it today - if you don't hear back from me you can assume that removing the NoBrowserOptions value from the registry did the trick. I also read that another option to fix the same thing is to extract a new copy of Inetcpl.cpl from the original CD. If I have to resort to that I'll post again so the info is here. Thanks to all. -----Original Message----- I am not sure why you posted here instead of an IE group but, yes, parasites can do this. Use Regedit.exe and search for NoBrowserOptions and remove it.
