Is it possible to install Windows Me over Windows Me? The
uninstall potion does not appear to be available. There is
nothing which it is vital to save. Thanks

Default Installing Windows Me

Is it possible to install Windows Me over Windows Me?

Yes. Why do you want to reinstall Win Me? This is very rarely necessary -
what problems are you experiencing?

Reinstalling Win Me over itself can however result in some problems especially
if you had previously
upgraded from IE5.5 to IE6 (See below) and possibly if you had installed an
early (beta) version of Windows Media Player 9. The WMP problems can be
avoided by renaming c:\windows\system\wmploc.dll to wmploc.old before
reinstalling Win Me. You will also need to reinstall some critical patches
even though the Windows Update site will not show them as being required due
to the original "IsInstalled" flag remaining set in the registry. The Belarc
Advisor (http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html) will help you here in
identifying which patches needed to be reinstalled.

If you have installed IE6 ideally this needs to be uninstalled before
(re-)installing Win Me. If this is the case you might want to have a look at
MS KB 312451 - "How to Remove Internet Explorer 6 by Reinstalling Windows"
(http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=312451) and also KB 293907 - "How to
Uninstall Internet Explorer 6" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=293907).

The uninstall potion does not appear to be available

You can only uninstall Win Me if:
a) you upgraded to Win Me from a previous operating system,
b) chose at that time to save the uninstall information, and,
c) have not subsequently delete the files containing the uninstall
information.
If all are true then there will be an entry in Add/Remove Programs to
uninstall Win Me and return to your previous operating system.
