Jeff,
Thx for your post. However, I found the information at the link you gave me too confusing. It would help if you (or anyone else) would answer a few questions. 1. The disk I have says it is "Microsoft Windows 98 for PCs without Windows." It is Second Edition and "For distribution with a new PC only." Is this what the instructions at your link call a "Restore disk"? 2. If I want a clean install with all previous information overwritten, can I just load this disk or do I need to manually wiped the disk clean first? 3. Pending the answer to 2., do I install by booting in dos mode and executing the setup program on the disk? Thx, Jim Jeff Richards wrote: You will find comprehensive instructions he http://home.satx.rr.com/badour/html/w98_restore.html W98 RESTORE DISK AND INSTALLATION PROCEDURES Hi all, I have an old computer that I want to give to a friend. On a working system: 1 Create a Windows 98 boot floppy 2 Remove the floppy and mark it Standard Boot Floppy 3 Create another Windows 98 boot floppy 4 Now delete all files on the 2nd floppy EXCEPT: = Autoexec.bat = COMMAND.COM = CONFIG.SYS = FORMAT.COM = HIMEM.SYS = IO.SYS = MSCDEX.EXE = MSDOS.SYS = OAKCDROM.SYS = RESTART.COM = SCANDISK.EXE = SCANDISK.INI = SYS.COM (You can skip Step #4 if you like) 5 Right-click on Autoexec.bat and select Edit 6 Delete the content of Autoexec.bat 7 Copy and paste the following into Autoexec.bat SYS C: LH A:\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD001 MD C:\WINDOWS MD C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS MD C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS D: CD \WIN98 COPY D:\WIN98\*.* C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS C: CD \WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS SETUP 6 Close Autoexec.Bat 7 Remove the floppy and mark it Modified Boot Floppy On the system to be refreshed: 1 Insert the Standard Boot Floppy and let it boot to DOS 2 Run FDISK 3 Remove all logical drives and all partitions 4 Create your Primary partition and make it active 5 Format C: 6 Remove the Standard Boot Floppy 7 Insert the Windows 98 CD-ROM disc in the CD-ROM drive 8 Insert the Modified Boot Floppy and reboot (CTRL-ALT-DEL) After the "Starting Windows 98" splash, this is what will happen 1 The system files will be copied to the C drive, making it bootable 2 The CD-ROM driver will be loaded 3 The C:\WINDOWS directory will be created 4 The C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS sub-directory will be created 5 The C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS sub-directory will be created 6 The computer will switch to the CD-ROM drive D: 7 The computer will switch to the WIN98 directory on D: 8 The WIN98 directory files will be copied from the CD-ROM disc to the C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS sub-directory 9 The computer will switch to the hard drive C: 10 The computer will switch to the C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS sub-directory 11 The Windows Setup program will begin When prompted, change the Windows install directory from C:\WINDOWS.000 to C:\WINDOWS. (Setup tries to use C:\WINDOWS.000 because C:\WINDOWS already exists. Do not let it do that. Force it to use C:\WINDOWS). After Setup completes, you can run FDISK to create additional primary and extended partitions and physical and logical drives as required. Then it is time to install the drivers and applications. |

What you have is an OEM disk. It should run OK if you treat is as a standard
Windows installation CD. A restore disk will usually have the supplier's brand name and specific instructions for how to use it. If you want a clean install the best procedure is to delete everything, format the disk and start with a blank partition. Note the comments at that site re confirming that the startup floppy is working and ensuring you have the product key before wiping everything. Because you are wiping the partition, you will need to boot to floppy in DOS mode and execute the SETUP program on the CD. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "Jim Slager" jslager@inameU_NO_WHATcom wrote in message ...
