Here is how I turn the Kill Bit on/off, not with GG's script... But, here is how to get them back when offline... First, "START, Find, F&F, Tshoot.inf"; R-Clk it & select "Install". If you still don't have the Troubleshooters... (1) "START, Run, RegEdit" (2) Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\{4B106874-DD36-11D0-8B44-00A024DD9EFF} Compatibility Flags 0x00000400 (1024) Dword value 400 by (a) Clicking plus signs, beginning with "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE", (b) & ending with "ActiveX Compatibility". (c) Finally, click "{4B106874-DD36-11D0-8B44-00A024DD9EFF}" itself in the left pane. (d) Now, you see "Compatibility Flags 0x00000400 (1024)" in the right pane. (e) "Registry menu, Export Registry file". This will create a ".reg" file of the entire Key that is open... all the items in the right pane & all sub-keys in the left pane (if there is a plus sign). Give it a name & location of your choosing, even to the Desktop or My Documents. Then, to undo the following, you will be able to simply click that file, to Merge it's contents back into the Registry. Actually-- name that one "NoTrouble.reg". It will look like... ...Start..... CAREFUL: That "HKEY" is one line, with TWO spaces only. One between "Internet Explorer", & the other between "ActiveX Compatibility". Make sure it looks that way in Notepad, before you click to Save. Also, you must have an empty line at bottom. Now, "Trouble.reg" gives you the Troubleshooters. "NoTrouble.reg" will give you security by taking them away. Remember to undo it, after you are done looking at the Troubleshooters. (2) By default, when a ".reg" is clicked, it will Merge into the Registry. To alter the default behavior: "START, Settings, Folder Options, File Types tab". Scroll to & click "Registration Entries", click the "Edit" button, select "edit" in the window & click the "Set Default" button. Now, when you click a ".reg" file, it will open in Notepad for examination. Run Windows help and wizards fail. Right click tshoot.inf and install, both GG's app and Windows wizards fail. Reboot. GG's app now works, wizards successful and Windows help wizards fail. With GG's app running, check registry entry for kill bit which is absent. Shutdown GG's app, check registry and kill bit entry is present. All works as should. Reboot 98SE machine mentioned in last post. Still no Wizards with either GG's app or Windows help. Run tshoot.inf install, check wizards which fail. Reboot, all is working as should. GG's app controls the registry entry to remove the kill bit when run and replace when closed. Running " Windows help wizards" (not GG's) still fail. I never thought a reboot was required and don't believe I had to do it on the first 98SE when I originally installed GG's app, yet it appears this is the case now. Stymies me a little but that's how it all went down. It now makes me wonder if one has to go thru the re-install of tshoot.inf, then install GG's app and reboot at some point to gain functionality due to a later update? For now I've done what I'm going too as the wizards/GG's app work (or don't) as they should/shouldn't. BTW, both 98SE machines were updated using the Security update CD and finished at the MS Update site. Can't see why but perhaps this method has something to do with it. I do have one more 98SE machine available to test that does not have GG's app and is fully updated ONLY from the MS Update site. Perhaps Glen has some insight on this. -- Brian A. MS disabled those Troubleshooters two different ways. Looks like
whenever they put out a new IE cumulative critical update, one needs to undo both again. Item (1) need be done only once. After that, item (2) may be toggled as desired. (1) R-Clk Tshoot.inf, & select "Install". This undoes the earliest "fix" that disabled them. (That "fix" apparently is included in the cumulative too.) It does not involve the Kill Bit. A careful examination of the Tshoot.inf file might say what it does involve, but it looks rather cryptic. Therefore, the easiest way to undo an "Install" of Tshoot.inf (if you want to), might be to Remove the last cumulative (in Add/Remove Programs)-- & then go get it again. But who knows how well THAT may go? (2) Turn off the Kill Bit, as I posted. (a) I find this does work to restore the Troubleshooters (after Installing Tshoot.inf once). (b) Turn the Kill Bit back on to disable the Troubleshooters. HOWEVER, it does not undo an Install of Tshoot.inf. What does THAT mean? Am I fully protected by just the Kill Bit? I was *able* to fix my T-shooters, *they do longer work within help*

If I reinstall my T-shooters via rt. clicking Tshoot.inf file, *am I not removing the kill-bit in the registry that is suppose to be protecting me*?? Thanks for clarification. Star

Therefore, the easiest way to undo an "Install" of Tshoot.inf (if you want to), might be to Remove the last cumulative (in Add/Remove Programs)-- & then go get it again. But who knows how well THAT may go? (2) Turn off the Kill Bit, as I posted. (a) I find this does work to restore the Troubleshooters (after Installing Tshoot.inf once). (b) Turn the Kill Bit back on to disable the Troubleshooters. HOWEVER, it does not undo an Install of Tshoot.inf. What does THAT mean? Am I fully protected by just the Kill Bit?
