Ethernet and Modem
Problem is that the Internet connection is
usually broken after 5 to 10 minutes on the new PC (ASUS Pentium 4.) Although we are on a rural phone line, this does not happen on the old PC (Pentium 2) which connects well and stays connected. The problem may be / System / Network configuration. The old PC is set up with just MS Dial-Up Adapter bound to TCP/IP. Both use Win98SE. Having Win98SE, the new PC has this Adapter and Protocol. It also has Ethernet circuitry main board (Marvell Yukon Gigabit 10/100/1000) built into the main board. If disabled, the ethernet tries to reinstal itself on reboot and add itself to / System / Network confguration, which thus shows: 1. Logon 2. Dial-Up Adapter 3. Marvell Yukon Gigabit 10/100/1000 Dial Up Adapter 4. TCP/IP - Dial-Up Adapter 5. TCP/IP - Marvell Yukon Gigabit 10/100/1000 Dial Up Adapter Case 1: With this default configuration for / System / Network, the PC connects OK (using MS IE v.6) but loses the connection within 5 to 10 minutes. It never stays connected longer. Case 2: With only MS DUA and TCP/IP the PC connects only slowly (initially 500 bytes received instead of 25,000) and loses the connection. Case 3: With only Ethernet DUA and TCP/IP configured, the PC cannot connect at all. So Case 1 is the best currently available, but makes it impossible to DL anything serious (e.g. AV data files of 4 too 5 Mb.) But this does not happen on the old PC, with no Ethernet, which connects with the simplest /Network configuration and remains connected. Advice? -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |
