Default Why is wordpad so stupid?

Why is it that when I open wordpad and drag a .TXT file over to it, it
throws an icon of a text file in the workspace instead of actually
opening the damn file?

And when I double-click this icon, notepad is spawned and the file is
opened in notepad.

IIRC, the default for wordpad is rtf.
The easy way I fixed this on a XP machine was to pick a random
txt file, "shift open" to get "open with", then check
"always open with" wordpad.
You can set the default "always open with" program back
to notepad if you want and wordpad will still open txt
files by drag and drop.
The hard way to fix is to manually edit the registry.
98 should be the same as xp for this item.

Indeed. If you just want to open it once, then make sure you untick
"always open with" (which IMO should _not_ be ticked by default [yes I
know there's a way of stopping it being]).

Wordpad is assuming you want to "embed" the .txt file. (I didn't know
Wordpad had this facility; I knew Word did.)

Since you are opening Wordpad then dragging a text file into it, can I
guess that maybe you are wanting to put the text from the .txt file into
an already-exisiting Wordpad document? If so, let it open in notepad,
then do a Ctrl-A Ctrl-C (select all, then copy), and you should be able
to paste (into Wordpad) no problem. (In Word, using Paste Special will
allow you to select plain text so that it goes in in whatever font
you're already using; I don't know if that's available in Wordpad, or if
it's a problem there anyway.)

I can't answer your question, but you can edit the Actions under the
Folder Options for TXT files so that when you r-click the file, you
are presented with a choice of Open with NotePad, or Open with
Wordpad, or Open with your preferred editor.

Alternatively, you could add WordPad and NotePad to the Send To
options in your contect menu.

WordPad is not stupid ... it's operator error!
To embed a TXT file, drag and drop into the workspace as you describe. To
open in WordPad drag and drop on the MENU BAR (or if I recall, any
non-workspace area).

I would normally end up in Wordpad *only* when I double-click a .txt
file and Notepad says "too big, try Wordpad instead", so I've not
experienced the drag-and-drop response.

I just tried your method and it certainly does behave that way.
