Default slow changing directories in explorer.exe 98

Running 98SE as I change directories while exploring the
deaper into sub directories I get the slower the system
gets. When I double click on a folder it can take up to
30+ seconds to change to it even if it is empty. However
If in MSWord or other programs I can browse directories as
much as I want with no delay.

Make a new folder on the desktop and move into it everything from My
Documents. Does that fix the problem? If so, find a new home for
everything you moved and limit how much you file in My Documents in the
future.

Thanks much,
Moving the files to a different folser in the root seemed
to do the trick. Is this a bug in My documents? The
problem seems to defeat the reason for having this common
folder for everything.

Brings up another question. What if? What if I moved the default location
to another partition? Will same symptoms result if browsing subfolders deep
in the C: partition or just the partition where My Documents is located or
no effect at all?

Create your own methodology for your files and information, its location(s)
by your designated partition, folder or subfolder. This has always been my
way. Its worked to date. Its a boon to recovery if you need it especially
an alternate partition.

AFAIK, the problem occurs when the special folder has around 100 or more sub
folders in it. I don't think anyone ever envisioned My Documents as being
the catch all for everything that is filed. Think of a filing
cabinet--would you only use one folder or a series of stand alone folders?

I have never tried moving it nor have I had the problem so I really don't
know the answers to your questions.

In at least one other place, I read that the problem occurs when My Documents
has more than 32 KB of (sub)folder entries. Perhaps that translates to around
100 subfolders?

Another related problem I note is that when subfolders of My Documents are
opened and closed, user resources appear to get used up quickly. (As
signalled by Symantec popup window "User resources low".) I wonder what
causes that.
