Default Windows 98 SE

I have a home computer with Windows 98 SE - my system
freezes up almost everytime I try to type an email using
Outlook Express, type a Word document, and sometimes when
I am using Internet Explorer. Does anyone know what is
causing this? Should I buy Windows XP upgrade, and will
that correct the problem? I am assuming it is 98 SE since
so many programs are affected.

I don't know whether to upgrade the programs or buy a new
computer. We don't use it that much so I would hate to
dump a lot of money.

HELP!

Signed, just another techno-dummy
